GSM & Family Visa Advice Specialist | Lawyer or RMA

You’re the person colleagues come to with tricky points-test questions and complicated partner visa histories. You can map out the best pathway in a single consult – and you love doing it.

As our GSM & Family Visa Advice Specialist, you’ll run initial consultations with a primary focus on General Skilled Migration, followed by family visas – and you’ll also advise on employer-sponsored and appeal options where they’re relevant. You’ll give clients clear, strategic advice in the room, then follow up straight after each session with written recommendations while everything is fresh. No ongoing case management. No lodgements. Just expert advice that changes people’s lives.

Too good to be true? It’s not!

Why you’ll love it here

Training and education from day one – structured onboarding, mentoring from senior practitioners, CPD support and access to our advice resources and precedents

Get out there – we back you to attend industry events and networking functions, and to be active in groups like the Migration Institute of Australia and the Law Society of SA

High-profile work – nationally recognised corporate clients and National Innovation Visa talent from Dubai, Singapore, Silicon Valley, the UK, Ireland and Hong Kong

We cover your MARA registration fees (RMAs) or practising certificate costs (lawyers), plus professional indemnity insurance and CPD costs

Build your profile – opportunities to speak at industry events and seminars and share your expertise alongside Chris and the team

Be part of our highly successful social media presence on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook – if you’re interested, there’s the chance to feature in our content and build your profile

Learn alongside experts, including Principal Lawyer Chris Johnston

Work to a schedule, not overtime – and leave workplace politics at the door

Focus on what you do best – our casework team takes it from there

Admin support so you can focus on the legal work

A clear path to grow – real opportunities to progress your career as you develop, with support every step of the way

Free off-street parking at our city-fringe Hindmarsh office, with a friendly, culturally diverse team

What you’ll be doing

Running initial consultations with a primary focus on GSM – subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas, the points test, skills assessments and state nomination

Advising on family visas, including partner, parent and child visas

Advising on employer-sponsored options where they’re the right fit for the client

Advising clients on their review and appeal options

Working out each client’s best strategy on the spot, including risks, timing and alternatives

Following up straight after each consultation with clear, accurate written advice

Handing clients who go ahead over to our casework team

Representing the firm at industry events

What you’ll bring

Admission as a lawyer (Supreme Court of SA, or able to be admitted) with an unrestricted practising certificate, or current registration as an RMA

In-depth, current knowledge of GSM and family visas – typically 2–3+ years advising in these areas

Sound knowledge of employer-sponsored visas and the appeals process, so you can advise on all realistic options

Excellent spoken and written English, as you’ll be advising clients directly in consultations and preparing written advice

The confidence to give clear, strategic advice in a single consultation

The discipline to turn around written follow-up advice promptly and accurately after every appointment

Great listening skills and genuine empathy for clients from all backgrounds

Australian work rights and willingness to undergo a National Police Check

Bonus points for knowledge of student/graduate visas, character and health waiver issues, or a second language.

Please note: for lawyers, we require an unrestricted practising certificate and are unable to accept applications from practitioners holding a restricted practising certificate at this time.
