The Human Technology Institute (HTI) is at the forefront of driving the regulatory, governance and technical change needed to enable a future where the benefits of digital technologies are not just delivered across Australia, but also delivered in a way that uplifts our communities and upholds human rights. We measure our success by directly influencing policy, by helping Australian business responsibly adopt digital technologies, and by building new data-driven systems that unlock value for underserved, minority, marginalised and vulnerable communities. We bring together a team of experts with deep experience in law, policy, procurement, governance, statistics, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.

HTI is seeking a Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Specialist to join the team on a two-year contract. You will play a key role in assessing and maximizing the impact of HTI’s projects and initiatives, with an initial focus on our work in the Australian AI policy, regulation and governance space. The MEL Specialist will lead the design, development, and application of MEL frameworks, focusing on understanding, measuring, and maximizing HTI’s impact in shaping how Australia regulates and manages AI in practice. This includes developing qualitative and quantitative metrics, driving best-practice for monitoring program performance, and engaging with senior stakeholders from across government, industry, and civil society to both assess and communicate our impact. You will deliver the majority of day-to-day MEL activities for HTI and translate findings from those activities into meaningful, resonant reporting.

With examples, please address the below four (4) key selection criteria within your 2-page cover letter:

  • Demonstrated skill in the design, development and delivery of MEL strategies and frameworks
  • Experience in the application of MEL thinking in areas relevant to HTI, including emerging technologies, responsible artificial intelligence, public policy, corporate governance, and technology development
  • Ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including senior leaders of industry and government organisations, and internal HTI team members
  • Proven capacity to effectively communicate key findings from MEL activities, both through formal and informal reporting, and the development of compelling impact narratives

For the full list of the selection criteria and role responsibilities please download the position description from our website.

A competitive remuneration package is on offer for the successful candidate. This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary. This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 2 years. This role is predominantly performed on campus four days per week, with the option to work one day remotely. UTS staff also benefit from a wide range of Employee Benefits including flexible work practices, child care centres, generous parental leave and salary packaging opportunities.

Applicants must have current and valid work rights in Australia. We welcome applications from women, Indigenous Australians, people with disability, those who identify as LGBTIQ and applicants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. UTS is recognised widely as supporting inclusivity and diversity through our Wingara Indigenous Employment Strategy, Social Impact Framework and UTS Access and Inclusion Plan. Cited as a WGEA Employer of Choice since the inception of the award, we were among the first Australian institutions to receive the Athena SWAN Bronze Accreditation for our commitment to action addressing gender equity in the STEMM disciplines.
