  • Ph D Scholarship - AI-Guided Molecular Recognition

A UNSW Scientia Ph D scholarship is available in the School of Chemistry at UNSW Sydney to develop new technologies combining native mass spectrometry, robotic chemistry and artificial intelligence.

The project will develop faster, more informative approaches to discovering and characterising molecules that bind to proteins.

Building on established methods for screening thousands of compounds simultaneously, you will help integrate multiplexed, multistage mass spectrometry with automated sample preparation, robotic experimentation and AI-guided experimental design.

You will work across analytical chemistry, organic synthesis and computational science, supported by an interdisciplinary supervisory team.

The project includes opportunities for research placements at the University of Florence, Italy.

The scholarship provides

  • An annual stipend of $39,991 (2027 rate) for 3.5 years.
  • A one-off $25,000 Global Mobility Grant to support international engagement.

Your supervisors will be Professors William A. Donald, Vinh Nguyen and Tiffany Walsh at UNSW, and Professor Claudiu T. Supuran at the University of Florence.

Domestic applicants only. Applicants should meet the following requirements through one of the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with first-class Honours.
  • A completed research Master’s degree with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity to complete a high-quality research thesis within the required timeframe.
  • A qualification from another tertiary institution assessed as equivalent by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee.
