Make a difference behind the scenes of Queensland's frontline emergency services

Are you a qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or Diesel Mechanic looking for an opportunity to work on specialised vehicles and equipment?

We are seeking an experienced mechanic to join a specialist Fleet Maintenance team, responsible for keeping fire appliances, heavy vehicles, pumps and associated equipment safe, compliant and ready for operational deployment. This is a unique opportunity to use your mechanical and diagnostic skills in an environment where the work you do directly supports Queensland's frontline emergency response capability.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, you will be responsible for the servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of a fleet of specialised fire appliances, heavy vehicles, pumps and associated systems.

  • Servicing and maintaining firefighting, pumping and associated systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Safely operating hand tools, specialised equipment and electronic diagnostic technology.
  • Undertaking road testing and fault diagnosis as required.
  • Completing electronic job sheets, maintenance records and parts inventory updates.
  • Communicating with the Workshop Supervisor regarding the condition of vehicles and equipment.
  • Participating in manufacturer and in-house training to maintain and develop technical competencies.
  • Working collaboratively within a team while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.

About You:

We are looking for a mechanically skilled professional who takes pride in delivering quality workmanship and enjoys working on complex equipment.

You will ideally have:

  • A trade qualified Heavy Diesel Mechanic or Light Vehicle Mechanic (with heavy diesel experience)
  • Demonstrated experience working as a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic or in a similar heavy vehicle environment.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Experience with electrical diagnostics and electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • The ability to work confidently with mechanical, hydraulic, pumping and associated systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to workplace health and safety.
  • Good computer skills and the ability to accurately complete electronic records and job sheets.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team while also undertaking tasks independently.

Candidates with a light vehicle mechanical trade qualification and strong relevant experience may also be considered, with the expectation that successful applicants will work towards updating their qualifications where required.

Essential / Desirable Requirements:

  • Current Medium Rigid (MR) driver's licence, or the ability to obtain one prior to appointment.
  • Relevant heavy vehicle mechanical trade qualification or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience.
  • A commitment to complying with workplace health and safety requirements and relevant heavy vehicle legislation.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This isn't your typical workshop role. You'll work on specialised emergency-service vehicles and equipment, developing your skills across mechanical, electrical, diagnostic, hydraulic and pumping systems while contributing to the operational readiness of frontline emergency services.

Initially offered as a 3-month temporary opportunity, with the potential for permanent employment for the right candidate.

If you're an experienced Heavy Vehicle Mechanic who enjoys variety, problem-solving and working on equipment that serves an important purpose, we'd love to hear from you.
