ABOUT US

The Salvation Army is a Christian movement and one of Australia’s largest and most-loved charities. We believe in doing good that transforms lives and futures for the better. It is this belief which drives us to find new ways and places where we can make a difference. From times of personal crisis to moments of national grief, we are always here — providing support, safety, community, and opportunity.

The Gardening Team Member plays an important part in ensuring the garden areas are safe and enjoyable for all community members, visiting agencies, staff, volunteers and officers. More broadly, we believe an inspiring and welcoming garden contributes to community wellbeing. Combining the practical and the aesthetic aspects of garden maintenance makes this role very satisfying for those who enjoy creating beautiful, peaceful and bountiful spaces, as well as neatness and order.

Key responsibilities:

  • Gardening activities: Applying a wealth of gardening knowledge and experience to regular maintenance such as sweeping, raking, mowing, weeding, pruning, mulching, composting and watering, as well as ongoing seasonal tasks to keep the harvest garden productive and pest-free.
  • Garden projects: Using vision, creativity and some project and budgeting management, consult with manager to plan and build garden beds, paths, and other garden features.
  • Garden equipment: Bringing a good dose of responsibility, ensure tools and equipment are properly checked, used and stored, with particular attention to ensuring they are maintained in safe working order at all times.

Qualifications and skills (desired/required):

  • Knowledge and experience in plants, soils, seasonal maintenance and small gardening projects is required.
  • Confident using and caring for gardening tools and equipment.
  • Level of fitness to undertake gardening activities, including digging and lifting soil.
  • Good communication skills, both listening to and conveying information/ideas/suggestions.

Background check requirements:

Background checks play an important part in our commitment to being a safe organisation. Below is what is required for this role. As this role requires access to valuable equipment and at times, unsupervised entry to secure areas, it requires a Police Check. In some states, this role is considered child-related and therefore may require a Working with Children Check/Working with Vulnerable People Check.
