About the role

This is a hands‑on technical leadership position. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding our technical team, coordinating technical workloads, overseeing service quality and taking an active role in planning and delivering IT projects. You will act as a senior escalation point for technicians while ensuring projects, tickets and customer commitments are properly managed through to completion. This position is suited to an experienced IT professional who enjoys solving technical problems but is also ready to take responsibility for people, projects, priorities and outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership and technical guidance to the IT support and service team
  • Allocate and coordinate technical work based on priority, skills and customer requirements
  • Monitor ticket queues, workloads, escalations and outstanding customer issues
  • Ensure technicians maintain appropriate ticket notes, documentation and customer communication
  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex technical issues
  • Assist technicians with troubleshooting and provide guidance rather than simply taking over every issue
  • Review technical work and maintain consistent service quality
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver IT projects from initial scope through to completion
  • Take hands‑on responsibility for complex or business‑critical projects
  • Develop project plans, technical requirements, implementation steps and resource requirements

About you

  • Strong previous experience in IT support, systems administration, infrastructure or managed services
  • Previous experience leading, mentoring or supervising technical staff
  • Demonstrated experience planning and delivering IT projects
  • Strong hands‑on troubleshooting capability
  • Good understanding of Microsoft 365 administration
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra ID, Exchange Online and related Microsoft cloud technologies
  • Strong networking knowledge including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP and VPNs
  • Experience with firewalls, business networks and Wi‑Fi environments
  • Experience with backup and disaster recovery technologies
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and good security practices

This is an opportunity to take a senior role within an established Cairns technology business while remaining actively involved in technology. The position provides exposure to a broad range of customer environments and technologies including Microsoft cloud, networking, cybersecurity, infrastructure, telecommunications, business internet and managed IT services. Unlike a purely administrative management position, this role allows you to continue developing your technical capabilities while building leadership and project management experience. You will have the opportunity to influence technical standards, improve service delivery and help develop the capabilities of the wider technical team.
