New Full-Stack JS Technical Lead position in Sydney – 2 days per week in Surry Hills with a Node/TS/React focus. Salary: $170k-$180k + super.
This role is for a global HR-tech SAAS business based in Surry Hills, which has recently secured strong financial backing and is looking to expand globally. Currently, their customer base is solely in Australia, but they are at the early stages of a significant 3-year growth plan following a recent merger and investment.
The software company is relatively small, with just 2 engineers in Sydney and a small offshore team, comprising about 20 people in total. They have 100,000 active users across 25 key customers (both blue and white-collar businesses across Australia).
We’re looking for a strong technical lead to own the tech stack and codebase, build rapport across the business, set technical direction, and work on future tech strategy.
Stack: Node.js, TypeScript, vanilla JavaScript for front-end (a move to React is planned), AWS, microservices, CI/CD, websockets (considering upgrades), and their own custom JS framework for their mobile app.
Initially, the role will involve approximately 80% coding, which may change over time as the company plans to hire additional developers in Sydney over the next 18 months. The business will also be hiring a new CTO this year for you to work alongside.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Revamping the front-end to React
- Coding in JavaScript - Node.js, TypeScript, and some infrastructure work
- Software architecture and future roadmap planning with the CEO
- Working alongside the lead DevOps engineer and lead QA
- Supporting the team in Manila as needed (minimal)
- Reviewing and considering all technical upgrades
- Completing major in-progress projects and planning new initiatives
- Collaborating with the leadership team on the future vision of the tech strategy
To summarise, we’re looking for someone with approximately 10 years of commercial experience in software engineering who is ready to step into a true leadership role and start building a small team of 4-5 people around them. This will always be a hands-on technical role, but over time, as the company scales, your day-to-day responsibilities could shift from coding to overseeing the tech direction.
Salary is around $180k + super + ESOP.
