About us

Services Australia (the Agency) is at the frontline of government service delivery, supporting millions of Australians. We support the economic, health and social wellbeing of Australia by delivering high-quality services and payments to the community on behalf of government. Our Agency’s responsibilities include Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services, as well as whole of government services such as myGov. Our goal is to make government services simple, so people can get on with their lives. We’re modernising the way we work to deliver a simple, helpful, respectful and transparent experience for customers.

Payments and Integrity Group

The Payments and Integrity Group aims to protect the integrity of government outlays for social welfare and Medicare Public claims. The Group does this by administering the Agency’s fraud and compliance risk programs, maintaining strategic information data holdings, and managing debt recovery and appeal processes.

The Fraud Investigation Branch assists in protecting the integrity of Commonwealth outlays administered by the Agency and Agency appropriations. The Branch is primarily involved in detecting and investigating cases of fraud relating to Medicare, Child Support and welfare programs. The Branch is also responsible for leading investigations of potential unauthorised access and/or disclosure of information, and internal (Administrative and program) fraud and corruption.

The Fraud Investigation Branch works closely with other agencies. Where necessary, the Agency takes appropriate action including investigating cases of fraud, undertaking joint-agency projects and operations, and contributing to the implementation of fraud prevention strategies. The Branch has specialised teams that are highly skilled in detecting and investigating fraud and related crime. It works closely with other Commonwealth agencies to respond quickly to these threats.

The Branch conducts its fraud investigations in accordance with Commonwealth law, with briefs of evidence prepared for consideration by the CDPP where there is sufficient evidence of an offence. Penalties imposed by the courts may include imprisonment and fines. The Branch may conduct an administrative investigation to determine a customer is/was receiving the correct entitlement. Administrative investigations are a key prevention and disruption tool. They provide the flexibility to apply a treatment other than a prosecution referral, allowing the Branch to match response to risk, act quickly to disrupt behaviour and make the best use of resources.

The Branch also has monitoring mechanisms in place for individuals of interest and undertakes analysis of information received, relating to current and emerging issues that may impact on the implementation of the Agency's compliance activity. The branch has responsibility for one key budget measure, the Fraud Fusion Taskforce.
