Building Surveyor - Career Path for Construction & Design Professionals
You've built your foundation in construction or design. Now take it somewhere different.
If you've spent the last few years working in architecture, construction management, contract administration or project delivery, there's an opportunity to turn that experience into a specialised career in Building Surveying.
I'm representing an established building consultancy looking to develop someone from a construction or design background into a Building Surveyor.
The best part? You don't need previous Building Surveying experience.
The business is prepared to invest in the right person, providing hands‑on training, direct mentorship and the opportunity to develop a long‑term career in a specialist area of the construction industry.
Whether you're an Architectural Graduate, Contract Administrator, Construction Management Graduate or Project Coordinator, this could be an opportunity to take your career in a different direction.
Why Consider Building Surveying?
Building Surveying sits at the intersection of architecture, construction and building legislation.
You'll develop an understanding of how buildings are assessed, how compliance is achieved and how design and construction requirements work together.
It's a career that combines technical thinking, problem‑solving, design interpretation and practical construction knowledge, with a pathway towards professional accreditation and long‑term career progression.
What Will You Be Involved In?
Working alongside experienced Building Surveyors, you'll gradually develop your technical knowledge and take on greater responsibility.
Your exposure will include:
- Design Reviews: Interpreting architectural drawings, construction documentation and technical details.
- Building Regulations: Developing an understanding of the National Construction Code (NCC), Australian Standards and relevant building legislation.
- Site Inspections: Visiting construction sites to understand how buildings are constructed and assess compliance requirements.
- Technical Assessments: Identifying potential compliance issues and exploring practical solutions.
- Project Collaboration: Working alongside architects, builders, developers, engineers and other construction professionals.
You'll gain exposure to a variety of residential, commercial and mixed-use projects across Sydney, with a combination of office‑based technical work and site experience.
Who Are We Looking For?
We're not necessarily looking for someone who has already worked in Building Surveying. We're interested in people who understand the built environment and want to develop a new technical specialisation.
Your background could include:
- Construction Management Graduate with experience in construction or site delivery.
- Contract Administrator looking to move away from traditional project commercial management.
- Architectural Graduate or Architectural Technician interested in applying their design knowledge differently.
- Project Coordinator or Site Coordinator wanting to explore a more technical career.
- Construction or Design Consultant considering a new professional direction.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- A degree or relevant qualification in Construction Management, Architecture, Building Design, Building Surveying or a related discipline.
- Some professional experience within the construction or design industry, ideally around 2–3 years.
- An understanding of how buildings are designed, documented or constructed.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and the confidence to work with different project stakeholders.
- An interest in building legislation, technical compliance and problem-solving.
- Exposure to Class 2–9 buildings and familiarity with the NCC or Australian Standards would be advantageous, but a willingness to learn is equally important.
What's On Offer?
This is an opportunity to move into a specialist profession without having to start your career from scratch.
You'll receive:
- $90,000 – $120,000 + Super, depending on experience.
- Direct mentorship from experienced industry professionals.
- Support and guidance towards professional accreditation.
- Exposure to a diverse range of construction and development projects.
- Ongoing professional development and long‑term career progression.
The business recognises that people from architecture and construction backgrounds already bring valuable industry knowledge. The opportunity is to build on that foundation and develop a completely new professional skill set.
Interested in a Different Direction?
If you've developed a foundation in architecture, construction or project delivery but are considering what your next career move could look like, this is worth exploring.
I'm David Hamilton, a Registered Architect in NSW (Reg. No. 11571) who has transitioned into specialist recruitment across the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industries.
Having worked within architectural practice, I understand the technical knowledge, commercial awareness and practical experience that professionals from these backgrounds bring to the wider construction industry.
I'm particularly interested in connecting people with opportunities they may not have previously considered.
If you'd like to understand more about Building Surveying and whether this career transition could be right for you, I'd welcome a confidential conversation.
*All shortlisted candidates will be contacted within two business days.
