Mechanical Design Engineer - SOLIDWORKS & Prototype Development
This is a hands‑on opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving problems, developing ideas and learning through testing.
You'll help translate the existing concept and benchtop prototype into documented designs, measurable tests and clear development decisions.
You'll work directly with our founder, take ownership of day‑to‑day mechanical design work and contribute to a project where your calculations, drawings and practical decisions shape what gets built.
Key responsibilities
- Develop SOLIDWORKS models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings and bills of materials.
- Perform and document engineering calculations covering loads, forces, motion, pressure, flow and component selection.
- Contribute to system performance and energy‑balance assessments, identifying assumptions and areas requiring testing or specialist input.
- Develop and refine mechanical assemblies and their interfaces with hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.
- Coordinate with suppliers, fabricators and component manufacturers to obtain quotations and support prototype construction.
- Help assemble prototypes, develop test plans, collect measurements and use the results to improve the design.
- Coordinate technical work with RESET's university collaborators and external specialists.
- Maintain clear design records, revision control, test reports and development milestones.
- Identify relevant engineering standards, safety requirements and technical risks throughout development.
About you
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with strong mechanical design experience.
- Demonstrated experience taking mechanical designs through development, manufacture and practical testing.
- Strong SOLIDWORKS skills, including 3D modelling, assemblies and detailed engineering drawings.
- Sound engineering fundamentals and the ability to explain and document your calculations.
- An understanding of materials, tolerances, manufacturing processes and design for assembly.
- Practical problem‑solving skills and confidence working with suppliers and fabricators.
- The ability to organise your work, communicate progress and raise technical concerns early.
- A collaborative approach, curiosity and a willingness to challenge assumptions constructively.
- Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, gearboxes, bearings, instrumentation or prototype test rigs would be particularly valuable.
- Exposure to energy systems, industrial machinery, mining equipment or research and development would also be welcome.
