Full-time opportunity until the end of February 2028 (parental leave cover).

One of the core objectives of the Reserve Bank of Australia is the provision of secure and reliable banknotes that Australians trust. This is fundamental to maintaining confidence in our currency and supporting the role of cash in an inclusive and resilient payments system.

The Note Issue Department is responsible for developing and issuing banknotes that Australians trust. It also works to ensure cash remains a viable means of payment for those who need or want to use it.

The Banknote Strategy and Engagement (BSE) section helps keep Australia’s banknotes resilient, accessible, and trusted by the public. We focus on strategic planning, research and analysis, stakeholder engagement, and oversight of design and production to help keep banknotes fit-for-purpose in an evolving environment. Our work includes producing high-quality analysis and collaborating with industry partners, law enforcement, central banks, and accessibility advocates to inform design and raise public awareness. A current flagship initiative is the $5 Redesign Project, celebrating First Nations cultures and history.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing strategic research and analysis to inform the Bank’s banknote strategies.
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders, including scientific, operational and policy teams.
  • Applying your strong analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills to shape strategic, policy and operational decisions.
  • Overseeing project management of high-profile initiatives such as the $5 Redesign Project, with responsibility for reporting to high-level governance committees.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners and accessibility advocates.
  • Providing influential, evidence-based advice to senior leadership on complex strategic and operational issues.
  • Leading and developing a high-performing team.

As part of the Note Issue's management team, you will contribute to a broad range of strategic and operational issues across the department.

Your background

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with sound judgement.
  • Strong leadership capability, preferably with experience managing teams.
  • Ability to communicate complex analysis, verbally and in writing, clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to navigate uncertainty and solve problems.
  • Excellent written communication skills for high-quality reports and documents.
  • A background in policy or related areas is desirable but not essential.
