Computer Vision Engineer, Edge AI | Deep Tech in Melbourne

Melbourne Full-Time On-site
R

We are partnered with a well-funded, early-stage Australian Edge AI and Autonomous Systems start-up to hire a Senior Computer Vision Engineer for a key early role in its Melbourne engineering team.

The company is building decentralised coordination technology for autonomous systems, for defence and dual-use applications. The programme is moving from a flight-tested prototype to a drone fleet.

The role

This role sits at the core of how the company’s autonomous platforms see and understand the world. You’ll take perception models from research through to real-time deployment on edge hardware, where compute, power and latency all matter.

What you’ll do

  • Design and build real-time perception pipelines for autonomous platforms, covering detection, tracking, segmentation and multi-camera perception

  • Deploy and optimise models on embedded edge hardware such as NVIDIA Jetson, balancing accuracy against latency and power

  • Integrate perception into the onboard autonomy stack (ROS 2) so drones can share and act on what they see

  • Work with the robotics and field team to test, validate and improve perception in real-world flight conditions

  • Help shape the perception architecture, tooling and engineering culture as the team grows

About you

  • Strong experience building computer vision systems for real-world, real-time applications

  • Depth in object detection, tracking, segmentation or multi-camera perception

  • Hands‑on deployment of models to edge devices, ideally NVIDIA Jetson or similar embedded GPUs

  • Model optimisation for the edge: TensorRT, ONNX, quantisation, pruning and profiling

  • Strong Python and C++, with PyTorch and OpenCV

Nice to have

Sensor fusion (EO/IR, LiDAR, radar) | On-device SLAM or visual-inertial odometry | Multi-agent or distributed perception | Simulation and synthetic data (Isaac Sim, Gazebo) | UAV or field robotics experience | Defence or dual-use experience

Eligibility

Australian citizenship, or permanent residency with a clear pathway to citizenship, is required. You must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
