Make a genuine connection through shared faith and meaningful support
We’re looking for a warm, compassionate and energetic Support Worker for a beautiful human with significant physical disabilities who values genuine connection with the people supporting her.
She enjoys getting out and about, meeting people, spending time at the gym and relaxing in her beautiful garden. Her Christian faith is an extremely important part of her life and identity, and she is particularly looking for someone who shares her faith and can connect with her through conversation, prayer and a shared knowledge of the Bible.
About her support needs
She lives with Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA), a progressive neurological condition that significantly affects her movement, coordination and speech. She is still sharp as a tack, has a wicked sense of humour, and is an author and poet with plenty to say despite the challenges she experiences communicating
She has extremely limited mobility and relies heavily on her Support Workers for most aspects of everyday life, from transfers and personal care to helping stretch and reposition her when her muscles spasm.
She has significant challenges with verbal communication and primarily uses eye gaze, together with some limited speech, to communicate. Patience, compassion, good listening skills and a genuine willingness to take the time to understand her are essential.
This is a hands-on, high-intensity support role involving:
- PEG feeding
- personal care including assisting with showering, toileting and morning and night time routine
- manual handling and mobility assistance
- medication assistance
- supporting communication and use of eye gaze
- household tasks
- community access, church and social activities
- driving her disability transport van.
About you
Personality and connection come first. We’re looking for someone who:
- shares a genuine Christian faith and is comfortable talking about faith, praying together and discussing the Bible
- has disability support experience, with high-intensity support experience (PEG, BT etc.) highly regarded
- Is skilled in hoisting and general manual handling experience
- is warm, patient, reliable and genuinely interested in building a meaningful connection
- respects participant choice, independence and individual way of communicating
- is willing to learn specific high-intensity support routines
- works well within a team and can adapt when plans or routines change
- holds an unrestricted driver’s licence and is confident driving her disability transport van.
This is a high-intensity support role, and includes:
- PEG feeding
- Personal care
- Light household tasks
- Supporting community access and activities
What We’re Looking For:
We’re not just hiring skills, we’re hiring people. You’ll be:
- Enthusiastic and reliable
- Compassionate and committed
- Able to build strong rapport and trust
- A genuinely good human (this is a must!!)
- Experience is important, but your attitude and personality matter even more. Training in her specific support needs will be provided to the right person.
We’re looking for more than someone who can complete support tasks. We want someone who will get to know the person they support, understand what matters to her and help her live a life connected to her faith, relationships and community.
