We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join the team at Royal Liverpool Hospital on a locum basis for an initial period of three months. This role is ideal for a clinician with experience in an acute adult inpatient setting, covering both critical care and medical wards. The successful candidate will be confident in assessing and managing adults with complex communication and swallowing difficulties, with a particular emphasis on dysphagia management.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based assessment and intervention, working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to support patient safety, recovery and rehabilitation. This opportunity offers flexible part-time or full-time working arrangements and an immediate start for a suitably qualified and experienced clinician.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Assess and manage adult inpatients presenting with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties.
  • Provide Speech and Language Therapy services across critical care and acute medical wards.
  • Undertake comprehensive dysphagia assessments and develop appropriate management plans.
  • Make evidence-based clinical recommendations to support safe and effective patient care, including advice on swallowing and dietary management.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to support patient recovery, rehabilitation and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records in line with professional and organisational standards.
  • Prioritise and manage a varied acute caseload, responding to changing clinical needs.
  • Where appropriately trained and competent, undertake Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Assessments (VFSS).

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
  • Current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.
  • Experience working within an acute adult inpatient setting.
  • Experience covering critical care and acute medical wards.
  • Competence in the assessment and management of dysphagia.
  • Strong clinical reasoning, assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and manage an acute caseload.
  • Competence in conducting FEES assessments.
  • Competence in conducting videofluoroscopic swallowing assessments (VFSS).
  • FEES and VFSS competencies would be advantageous but are not essential for this role.
