Senior Associate / Special Counsel - Employment Law

We are seeking a Senior Associate / Special Counsel – Employment to join our team!

Are you an experienced employment law professional with at least seven years of post-admission experience, ready to take on genuine ownership of complex matters within a well-established boutique practice? This is a great opportunity to join a respected firm with over 30 years of history, advising a diverse range of clients predominantly within the healthcare sector, as well as hospitality and real estate. With direct client engagement, end-to-end matter experience, and a collaborative team environment, this role offers real scope to continue developing expertise at a senior level.

The client base spans a diverse range of organisations, from leading and publicly listed national healthcare providers through to local sports clubs. As a boutique firm, they offer something larger firms often cannot: genuine direct client engagement and the opportunity to work on matters end-to-end. Based in Docklands, they offer a collaborative team environment with a genuine focus on work-life balance.

What you'll be doing?

  • Providing strategic workplace advice β€” Delivering practical and technical advice on a range of workplace issues including restructures, redundancy, dispute management, misconduct, and termination.
  • Advising on legislative compliance β€” Providing clear interpretive advice on legislation and industrial instruments, and supporting clients with compliance and implementation requirements.
  • Leading enterprise bargaining β€” Taking a leading role in enterprise bargaining including drafting and negotiating enterprise agreements, managing approvals processes, and advising on bargaining disputes.
  • Delivering advisory services β€” Providing advice through the firm's national employment law advisory service, supporting clients with timely and practical guidance.
  • Managing litigation matters β€” Representing and advising clients on litigation matters including claims before the Fair Work Commission, VCAT and comparable state or territory tribunals, the Federal Circuit Court, and the Federal Court.
  • Maintaining file and billing practices β€” Ensuring accurate and timely file management, time recording, and billing practices in accordance with firm requirements.
  • Engaging directly with clients β€” Working closely and directly with a diverse client base, including large corporate healthcare entities, managing varied and complex matters end-to-end.
  • Mentoring junior team members β€” Supporting the development of junior lawyers within the team, sharing expertise and guidance as a senior member of the practice.

Who are we looking for?

  • Post-admission experience β€” A minimum of seven years of post-admission experience across employment law and industrial relations matters is required for this role.
  • Autonomous and collaborative β€” Demonstrated capability to work independently as well as within a team, managing a diverse and complex workload with confidence.
  • Strong technical skills β€” Strong analytical and practical problem-solving ability, along with excellent technical drafting skills.
  • Communication skills β€” Excellent written and oral communication skills, combined with strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Time management β€” The ability to manage competing deadlines and prioritise work effectively in a fast-paced legal environment.

Why you should consider this opportunity?

We offer an attractive remuneration package and other benefits, such as:

  • Competitive salary β€” A competitive salary commensurate with experience, with flexibility for candidates who bring additional expertise.
  • Hybrid working arrangement β€” A flexible hybrid model with three days in the office and two days working from home.
  • Collaborative team environment β€” Join a supportive and collaborative team with a genuine focus on work-life balance.
  • Direct client engagement β€” Gain genuine end-to-end matter experience and direct client contact, a key advantage of working within a boutique practice.
  • Diverse and meaningful client base β€” Work with a varied client portfolio including large corporate healthcare entities, hospitality businesses, and local sports clubs, offering genuine breadth of experience.
  • On-site parking β€” Convenient on-site parking available at the Docklands office location.

We welcome applications from experienced employment law professionals ready to take the next step in their career β€” if this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.
