Support Aboriginal people and communities to access significant historical family records. Use your investigation, case management and digital records expertise to make a real difference.

About the Role

As a Project Officer you will join the Family Records Service and play a meaningful role supporting Aboriginal people, families and communities to access historical records held by government. You will undertake the majority of records searches, assist with complex registration matters, complete initial redactions of sensitive information, and contribute to projects that improve how records are managed and accessed. This role requires regular engagement with Aboriginal Elders, community members and applicants seeking access to personal and family records, including records created by the former Aborigines Welfare Board. Working with care, professionalism and cultural sensitivity, you will support individuals through what can often be an emotional and highly personal process. You will join the Truth and Healing Branch within Aboriginal Affairs NSW, contributing to the delivery of Unfinished Business commitments and priorities identified by Stolen Generations survivors and Aboriginal communities. The team works at the intersection of truth-telling, healing and community connection, providing culturally responsive services and projects that help Aboriginal people access, understand and reconnect with important personal and family histories.

We're Looking For

  • Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity: Demonstrated ability to engage respectfully and compassionately with Aboriginal people, families, Elders and communities when discussing sensitive personal and family information.
  • Case Management, Records or Client Service Experience: Experience managing complex enquiries, records-based work or case-based services, particularly where sensitive, personal or confidential information is involved.
  • Research and Investigation Skills: Ability to conduct detailed searches across databases, archives and records systems, analyse information and compile accurate records for release.
  • Digital Capability: Strong skills using electronic records management systems, document management platforms, PDF software and information redaction tools.
  • Communication and Relationship Building: Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with diverse stakeholders, both over the phone and in person, while maintaining confidentiality and trust.
  • Empathy and Cultural Responsiveness: Ability to support people through sensitive and significant personal enquiries with empathy, professionalism and a culturally respectful approach to service delivery.

We value diverse experiences. Even if you're not sure you meet all requirements, we encourage you to apply.

Why Join Us?

  • Flexible Working: Broad range of flexible working arrangements.
  • Career Development: Ongoing learning through expert-led sessions, online training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Work-Life Balance: Flex time accrual for extra hours worked (for non-executive roles) based on a 35-hour standard week.
  • Wellbeing Support: Access to employee assistance program, fitness passport program, and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Inclusive Culture: Staff-led networks including Aboriginal Staff Advisory Committee, Diversity & Inclusion Network, and Young Professionals Network.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply for this targeted role, and greater consideration will be given to their applications, in order to improve access to employment and career opportunities.
