CIVIL FLOOD MODELLER / FLOOD ENGINEER - Sydney

  • Convenient North shore location close to all transport needs
  • Strengths using TUFLOW / Hydrology & Hydraulic Modelling
  • Strong Career Development with a well-regarded consultancy
  • 3-5 years’ experience, salary to $140k

You’re already modelling floods. But are you getting the opportunity to influence the engineering decisions that follow?

  • You've developed experience in hydrology, hydraulic modelling and flood assessments.
  • You understand that successful flood modelling isn't simply about running software and producing flood maps.
  • It's about interpreting the results, understanding the implications and helping engineers, planners and clients make informed decisions.
  • Pperhaps you're now looking for an opportunity to work on more challenging assignments, strengthen your technical capabilities and become more involved in the broader engineering process.
  • A highly regarded multidisciplinary engineering consultancy in Sydney is seeking a capable and ambitious Civil Flood Modeller / Flood Engineer to join its established team.

More than simply producing flood models

This opportunity offers the chance to become involved in complex hydrological and hydraulic assessments, working alongside experienced engineers and other technical specialists.

You'll be encouraged to apply your engineering judgement, investigate alternative approaches and develop practical solutions to challenging flooding and drainage problems.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking hydrological and hydraulic modelling assessments.
  • Developing, reviewing and interpreting flood models using TUFLOW and associated software.
  • Preparing modelling outputs for flood mapping and technical reporting.
  • Undertaking spatial analysis using QGIS and other relevant tools.
  • Analysing flood behaviour, identifying constraints and evaluating potential engineering solutions.
  • Preparing technical reports, documentation and recommendations for clients.
  • Contributing to project planning, delivery programmes and budgets.
  • Coordinating with engineers, designers and other project stakeholders.
  • Reviewing and checking the work of developing engineers where appropriate.
  • Becoming progressively more involved in project management and client communication.

You'll have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and technical knowledge rather than simply following instructions.

Develop your expertise and broaden your responsibilities.

  • One of the attractions of this opportunity is the ability to build on your existing flood modelling experience while developing a broader understanding of engineering project delivery.
  • You'll work with experienced professionals who can provide technical guidance and support as you take on increasingly complex assignments.
  • Whether your ambition is to become a recognised technical specialist in flood modelling or to progress towards broader project leadership, this position offers the opportunity to develop the skills required for that next step.

The consultancy is particularly interested in someone who enjoys problem-solving, takes initiative and wants to continue improving their technical capability.

What we’re looking for:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least three years' experience in hydraulic modelling, hydrological analysis or flood engineering.
  • A sound working knowledge of TUFLOW.
  • Experience with QGIS and spatial analysis.
  • Familiarity with relevant modelling and drainage software, potentially including DRAINS, RAFTS, WBNM, RORB, URBS or MUSIC.
  • An understanding of relevant Australian engineering standards and requirements.
  • The ability to analyse complex technical information and communicate your findings clearly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good attention to detail, time management and a proactive approach to engineering challenges.
  • A genuine interest in developing your technical expertise and taking on greater responsibility.

You don't need to be proficient in every software package listed.

  • What matters is that you have a solid foundation in flood modelling, particularly TUFLOW, and the ability to learn, investigate and solve engineering problems.
  • Engineers Australia membership is expected, with progress towards Chartered Professional Engineer status regarded favourably depending on your experience.
  • Your technical judgement should be valued
  • A good Flood Modeller doesn't just produce a set of results.
  • They understand what those results mean, recognise when something doesn't look right and have the confidence to investigate further.
  • They can explain complex technical findings clearly and contribute to solutions that satisfy both engineering requirements and client objectives.

That's the kind of engineer this consultancy wants to develop.

  • Someone who is technically capable today, but has the curiosity, initiative and ambition to become considerably more valuable tomorrow.
  • Is it time to take your flood modelling career further?
  • If you've gained a few years' experience in flood modelling and are now looking for greater technical challenges, more project involvement and the opportunity to develop professionally, this position deserves a confidential conversation.

You don't need to be looking actively.

Sometimes it's worth discovering what another consultancy could offer before deciding where you want your career to go next.

Note: Only Australian / New Zealand applicants with local experience are encouraged to apply.
