We are looking for a Junior Accountant with strong costing skills to join Odessa Oils. Our accounts receivable and accounts payable staff handle day-to-day invoicing, payments and collections. You will sit above that work: owning product costing, margin analysis, reporting, budgeting, cash flow and financial controls, and making sure the numbers are accurate and useful for decision-making. You will work closely with the director, operations, purchasing, warehouse and sales, and you will be expected to bring insights, not just numbers. This is a great opportunity for someone with manufacturing finance experience who wants to step into a broad, high-exposure finance role.
- Key responsibilities
- Own product costing for our edible oil range, including raw oil, packaging, labour, freight and overheads, and keep costs current as supplier and freight prices change.
- Maintain standard costs and analyse variances, including yield and wastage, and report on what is driving them.
- Analyse pricing and margins by product, customer and channel, and advise management on profitability.
- Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet and KPI reporting, with clear commentary for the director.
- Lead month-end and year-end close, including journals, accruals, prepayments and account reconciliations.
- Oversee inventory accounting, including stock valuation, stocktakes, cycle counts and reconciliation of raw materials, packaging and finished goods.
- Review and supervise the work of the accounts receivable and accounts payable staff, including approving payment runs, checking reconciliations and following up overdue debtors.
- Monitor cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts, and work with the bank and finance providers as required.
- Prepare budgets and forecasts, and track actual performance against them.
- Develop and improve financial controls, policies, approval processes and finance systems.
About you
- 3+ years of accounting experience, ideally in a manufacturing or food production environment.
- Solid understanding of costing, including standard costing and inventory valuation.
- Working knowledge of GST, BAS and month-end processes.
- A degree in accounting or finance is required, preferably with a CPA or CA qualification.
- Experience with an accounting or ERP system.
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Commercial mindset and the initiative to work with minimal supervision.
- Clear communication skills, with confidence presenting numbers to director and working with people across the business.
- Ability to guide and review the work of AR and AP team members.
