Reporting to the Editor, this role is central to our early-morning news publishing, setting the agenda and driving fast, accurate, and competitive coverage for an Australian wire service. You will work with a dynamic team to assign reporters, shape coverage, and make quick editorial calls across breaking metro and regional news, courts, crime, politics, and finance. By managing stakeholder relationships - including internal and external clients - you will ensure the delivery of first-class, clean, and accurate content, making decisions that have an immediate impact on our national news file, clients, and overall newsroom performance.
About the role:
- Lead NewsWire's 6am breaking news shift to shape the national news coverage from the start of the day.
- Coordinate morning coverage across priority rounds, including breaking news.
- Assign reporters quickly and effectively.
- Ensure seamless collaboration between reporters, editors, photographers and other departments to meet deadlines and produce engaging, informative content.
- Edit, publish, and move copy quickly while maintaining accuracy, fairness, and clear attribution.
- Write and refine headlines, intros, and urgent copy suitable for NewsWire clients.
- Uphold NewsWire's editorial standards, legal obligations, and competitive edge in all published material.
Who are you?
- You have strong newsroom experience in breaking news editing, preferably within a wire service, national newsroom, or fast-paced digital operation.
- You have proven experience assigning reporters and running a live news desk under pressure.
- You have strong editing skills with the ability to turn around clean, accurate, online-ready copy at speed.
- You hold a sound understanding of Australian media law, including defamation, contempt, court restrictions, and reporting risks.
- You are a strong communicator with a direct, constructive editing style who can effectively get the best out of a team on a busy shift.
- You are calm, decisive, highly organised, and fast-thinking, remaining competitive without ever sacrificing accuracy.
- You operate with a strong sense of urgency and accountability.
- You are deeply invested in building a positive, high-performing newsroom culture within a dynamic team.
