Hobart-based | Flexible working arrangements | Meaningful work
Passionate about people, fairness and making a real difference? Here's your opportunity to turn that passion into action. The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) represents over 30,000 academic and professional staff across Australia's universities and tertiary education sector. We're a progressive, member-driven organisation committed to protecting workers' rights, strengthening workplace representation and creating fairer, more inclusive workplaces.
We're looking for a motivated and engaging Union Organiser to join our small, dedicated Tasmanian team, primarily supporting members at the University of Tasmania. This is an ongoing part-time opportunity at 0.5 FTE (17.5 hours per week), with the potential to increase to full-time hours (37.5 hours per week) through a fixed-term arrangement.
Your opportunity to make an impact:
- This isn't a role where you'll simply sit behind a desk. You'll be out connecting with people, building relationships, developing workplace leaders and helping members have a stronger voice.
Working collaboratively with the Tasmanian team, you'll:
- Grow our membership by connecting with workers and demonstrating the value of union representation.
- Empower workplace leaders by identifying, mentoring and supporting union representatives.
- Build strong networks across university campuses and regional worksites.
- Drive meaningful change through workplace organising, advocacy and union campaigns.
- Engage and inspire members through face-to-face conversations, events and digital communications.
Is this you? We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys connecting with people, believes in collective action and knows how to turn conversations into engagement. Ideally, you'll bring:
- Experience in union organising, community advocacy, campaigning or a similar people-focused environment.
- Excellent communication skills and a natural ability to build trust and relationships.
- Confidence engaging with people from diverse backgrounds.
- The ability to motivate, organise and bring people together around shared goals.
- A genuine commitment to workers' rights, fairness and social justice.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone with initiative, enthusiasm and the drive to make things happen.
Why join NTEU? Beyond the opportunity to do work that matters, you'll enjoy:
- Competitive remuneration at Level 5 or 6, depending on experience.
- An additional 17% employer superannuation contribution.
- Flexibility with working arrangements between 9 am and 5 pm.
- A supportive, inclusive team that values your ideas and contribution.
- A rewarding career where your efforts can make a tangible difference to people's working lives.
Applications close 16 November 2026. For further information, contact Dr Paige Kelly, TAS Division Secretary, at tas@nteu.org.au.
NTEU is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. Applicants from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply and will receive priority consideration in the selection process.
