METAS Engineering Consultants Pty Ltd provides materials engineering, NATA-accredited laboratory testing, inspection, corrosion assessment, welding engineering and failure investigation services to industrial and infrastructure clients.

About the role

We are seeking a Materials Engineer to assess material properties and performance, investigate failures, interpret test results and provide practical engineering recommendations.

Employment: Permanent, full-time | 38 hours per week

Key responsibilities

  • Investigate and evaluate the properties, microstructure, mechanical behaviour and suitability of metals, alloys and other engineering materials for specific applications.
  • Review engineering requirements and recommend material selection based on service environment, strength, durability, performance, specifications and cost.
  • Plan and coordinate laboratory test programs, including mechanical testing, hardness testing, metallography and advanced materials characterisation, and interpret results.
  • Investigate material or component failures by reviewing service history, degradation and fracture evidence, and test data; determine likely causes and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
  • Assess corrosion, erosion, wear, heat treatment and welding-related effects on material performance and remaining fitness for intended service.
  • Develop, review and improve materials testing methods, technical procedures and quality controls, ensuring suitable materials and equipment meet project specifications.
  • Prepare engineering assessment reports, material selection advice, failure investigation findings and technical documentation for clients and project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with laboratory personnel, inspection teams, engineers and clients on testing, fabrication and materials performance issues while maintaining safe work practices.

Qualifications and experience

  • Master’s degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in materials engineering, metallurgy, materials testing or failure analysis.
  • Practical knowledge of metallic materials, microstructure–property relationships, mechanical testing, materials selection and performance assessment.
  • Experience analysing material degradation, corrosion, failures or welded components and preparing technical engineering reports.
  • Ability to interpret applicable engineering specifications, test methods and quality requirements; familiarity with Australian Standards is advantageous.

Highly regarded experience

  • Welding engineering, weld metallurgy and welding inspection.
  • Additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing and new materials processing.
  • Laboratory and industrial equipment operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Root cause analysis and failure investigations.
