If you’re passionate about improving outcomes in the lives of children, families and individuals, and in building stronger communities, we would like to hear from you.

Mallee Family Care supports professional development and offers generous salary packaging and paid placements where appropriate. We are committed to building an organisation that reflects the diversity of the communities we support. As an Equal Opportunity employer, we invite applications from people of all walks of life. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD), LGBTQIA+, and people living with a disability are encouraged to apply for our roles.

Position Objectives:

The Family and Carer Peer Worker will bring what they have learned from their lived or living experience as a family member, carer or supporter of people with mental health challenges and/or alcohol and drug challenges. Family and Carer peer workers primarily work with families and carers and walk alongside service users to improve mental health and wellbeing. This is done in alignment with Mallee Family Care and lead organisation Mind’s recovery orientated approach to working with families and carers, Peer Work Framework and Intentional Peer Support.

The Family and Carer Peer Worker is expected to champion the voice of lived experience, advocate for human rights and provide an alternative to traditional mental health responses by working relationally and through the practice of mutuality. Additionally, Family and Carer Peer Workers practice in alignment with family-centred principles, relational recovery-oriented approaches, trauma-informed theories, intersectional and anti-racist/anti-oppressive ways of working.

Family and Carer Peer Workers champion co-production practices and actively participate in that services and programs centre the needs and preferences of service users. They work to place the relationship and service user’s journey at the centre. Family and Carer Peer Workers work alongside a person to understand their hopes and challenges and identify how they would like to move towards what is possible in their lives through a relational approach.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/or Advanced Training, or Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, is desirable but not required.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by Mallee Family Care are also desirable but not required.
  • A current drivers licence, a willingness to travel and preparedness to be accommodated overnight when required.

For you to be considered for this role, all applications must be submitted with a Cover Letter, Resume and the Key Selection Criteria addressed, which can be found in the position description.
