The Banking and Financial Services Credit Risk Team is responsible for managing and strengthening credit risk capability across a diverse portfolio of banking and financial services products. Our team leads the design, implementation and oversight of credit risk policies and frameworks, ensuring lending practices remain aligned with strategic objectives and risk appetite. Leveraging portfolio reporting, data analytics and industry insights, the team delivers informed risk assessments and supports sound decision making across the lending lifecycle.

Working closely with business banking, product, technology, operations and central risk management teams, the Credit Risk Team drives the ongoing enhancement of commercial lending policies, risk acceptance criteria and governance practices. The team's expertise helps balance growth opportunities with prudent risk management, ensuring robust controls are in place while supporting customers and the broader business through responsible lending decisions.

Reporting to the Head of Business Banking Credit Risk in Line 1, you will play a strategic risk management and governance role, overseeing the quality and performance of the bank’s approved panel of external commercial valuation firms and providing expert property risk advice on complex commercial transactions. You will interface with panel valuers, driving quality and consistency, manage escalations and disputes, and support Product teams with vendor onboarding, offboarding and ongoing management.

While you will not be conducting field valuations, you will perform technical reviews of high-value and complex commercial property valuation reports, challenge external valuations where appropriate, and design and oversee quality assurance and hindsighting frameworks to ensure compliance with banking policy and industry standards. As the primary Subject Matter Expert for commercial property risk, you will partner with Business Banking Relationship Managers and Credit Underwriters to provide early-stage advice on deal structuring, collateral eligibility and LVR parameters.

You will translate complex valuation and property risks into clear, commercial advice, monitor market trends, emerging risks and portfolio concentrations, and provide insights and reporting to risk committees and senior leadership. You will also contribute to the ongoing development of the bank’s credit policies, risk appetite statements and valuation guidelines, including recommending LVR limits for specific asset classes, while championing the adoption of digital valuation platforms and technology to improve turnaround times and customer experience.

What you offer:

  • 7+ years of experience in commercial property valuation, property risk, or a related credit risk function within the financial services sector.
  • Certified Practising Valuer accreditation with the Australian Property Institute (API) or equivalent international body (e.g., RICS).
  • Tertiary degree in Property, Real Estate, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience managing third-party vendor relationships, panel governance, and SLAs.
  • Deep technical knowledge of commercial property markets, valuation methodologies, and construction/development finance principles.
  • Strong understanding of banking regulatory environments, credit risk policies, and prudential standards.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management: The ability to confidently challenge external experts and influence senior internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distil complex market data into actionable risk insights.
