About the Mackay Hospital & Health Service

Mackay Hospital and Health Service is dedicated to delivering quality health care across the Mackay, Isaac, and Whitsunday regions. Our contemporary organisation provides extensive health services across regional, community and rural settings to a population of around 182,000 people. The MHHS operates 6 hospitals, 2 multi‐purpose health services and 4 community health centres, employing more than 3,700 staff. The Mackay Base Hospital is the referral hospital for the region and is one of the most modern healthcare facilities in Queensland.

We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and sea on which we serve our communities and pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We are committed to reducing inequalities in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and strongly encourage them to apply for all advertised positions.

Bowen Hospital

The Bowen Hospital is a modern, well‐equipped rural facility with 20 beds, a 24‐hour emergency department, and services for chemotherapy, dialysis, CT, USS, and outpatient clinics. The facility offers a true Rural Generalist environment, where doctors work across emergency, inpatient management and some outpatient clinics. Strong clinical links exist with Mackay Base Hospital and tertiary centres in Townsville, ensuring safe escalation pathways and specialist input. Telehealth and retrieval services provide confidence when managing higher‐acuity patients, allowing clinicians to practise with autonomy while remaining well supported.

Your Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to practise broad‐scope, high‐impact medicine at Bowen Hospital. As a Rural Generalist, you will work at the top of your scope across the facility, in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The role offers professional autonomy, meaningful continuity of care, and the chance to build lasting relationships within a welcoming coastal community, while contributing to service innovation, quality improvement, education and the sustainability of rural healthcare delivery.

Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) Requirements

It is a condition of employment for this role that the employee be and remain vaccinated against vaccine‐preventable diseases as listed on the Role Description.
