English and Literacy Tutor β Cambridge (CB2)
Hours: Full-time or Part-time, up to 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Contract: Temporary, ongoing β open to contract or self-employed
Essential: Full UK driving licence and access to your own car
An alternative education provider in Cambridge needs an English Tutor to teach pupils aged 5 to 18 on a one-to-one basis. The young people you teach are not currently attending school, and many have autism, ADHD or anxiety, so sessions are short, structured and built around each pupil's interests. You will cover reading, writing and spoken English up to Functional Skills and GCSE level, working at home visits, community venues and a local centre. The role is full-time or part-time, up to 30 hours a week in term time, with travel time paid and fuel reimbursed.
About the Provider
The provider works with local authorities to support young people aged 5 to 18 who are missing education, including pupils with SEND (autism, ADHD, PDA), young people in care and those who are anxious about, or have been excluded from, school. Work is one-to-one and happens wherever the pupil is most comfortable: at home, out in the community or at a learning centre.
The Role
- Teach Functional Skills English (Entry Level to Level 2) and GCSE English Language on a one-to-one basis
- Run reading and writing catch-up for primary-age pupils who have fallen behind
- Use pupils' interests (football, gaming, music) to make reading and writing tasks relevant
- Prepare pupils for exams and assessments with practice papers and revision plans
- Record attendance and progress after every session
- Share progress with mentors, families and the local authority through regular reports
What You'll Need
- A full UK driving licence and access to your own car (business insurance required)
- Tutoring or teaching experience in English β Functional Skills, GCSE or primary literacy
- Confidence adapting lessons for pupils with autism, ADHD or anxiety
- Flexible availability across Monday to Friday, up to 30 hours a week
- Experience in a PRU, alternative provision or SEN school would help
- QTS preferred, particularly for GCSE teaching, but not essential
We're looking for a calm, dependable tutor who can turn a reluctant reader into a willing one.
