Our client is a national freight management business. They look after the freight networks of their customers, matching the right carrier, method and price to each job, then managing it end to end so the customer doesn't have to.
It's a small team with an eight-figure turnover, and it's growing strongly on referrals alone. The business has always been profitable and well run. Now the plan is to step up growth, add outbound sales and get the operation ready for scale. That's where you come in.
The Role
This is the hands-on operational lead for the business, reporting to the General Manager. You'll keep the engine running smoothly day to day and then make it better.
It's a genuinely autonomous role. You'll be trusted to run your own day, and you'll lead a small, experienced team who know their functions well and don't need hand holding. The GM has plenty of improvement ideas and wants someone who can execute on them, and bring their own.
What You'll Be Doing
- Running daily freight operations accurately across the business systems, including a freight management platform and Xero
- Owning the data. Cleaning raw freight and billing data, building reports and models from scratch, and checking your own numbers before they reach a client
- Building strong relationships with clients and carriers, growing accounts and holding a firm line on terms and pricing
- Delivering bad news early and honestly when things go wrong
- Improving back-end processes with measurable results, and documenting them so the business isn't reliant on one person
- Leading, delegating to and supporting a small team, with proper handover and follow-up
- Triaging competing priorities and staying calm and accurate at peak volume
What You'll Bring
- Strong systems skills. You pick up complex platforms quickly and run them accurately
- Excellent hands-on Excel: lookups, SUMIFS, pivot tables, data cleaning and building models from scratch. This is the top priority
- MachShip and Xero experience is a big advantage
- A track record of process improvement with results you can point to
- Confidence managing client and carrier relationships, including the tough conversations
- A small-team, sleeves-up attitude. You own mistakes quickly, communicate directly and take feedback well
- Freight or transport experience is a plus, but aptitude and accuracy matter more
