Lead Cobar Shire Council into its next chapter. Drive economic diversification, ambitious population growth, and high-level government advocacy in Outback NSW.
Lead the strategic diversification of a major regional economy beyond mining. Develop innovative strategies to achieve the goal of doubling the population. Take on a stable GM role following the retirement of the long-serving incumbent.
Commanding one of the largest regional footprints in New South Wales from the junction of the Barrier Highway and the Kidman Way, Cobar Shire Council leads a proud, self-reliant community built on Outback resilience. Established on a foundation of mineral wealth and pastoral enterprise, the Shire functions as a commercial and community hub for the Far West region.
Following the retirement of the long-serving incumbent, Council is recruiting a new General Manager to guide the organisation into its next phase of strategic development while maintaining consistent service delivery for the local community. The General Manager is responsible for the operational leadership of the Council and the execution of its long-term strategic plans during a period of economic transition.
A primary challenge for the incoming executive is addressing a contraction in local mining activity by diversifying the regional economy and identifying alternative avenues for sustainable growth. Council has set an ambitious target to double the population of Cobar, requiring the development of new industries, housing, and community infrastructure.
Furthermore, because the Council operates with a relatively small rate base and relies significantly on external grant funding, securing ongoing financial investment from external bodies is a core requirement of the position. Success in this role requires an executive with a strong track record in economic development, financial management, and high-level government relations.
The ideal candidate will bring practical, innovative strategies to support the Council’s vision for sustainable population growth and attract diverse, non-mining investment to the Shire. Crucially, the new General Manager must possess an established network and strong advocacy skills, working alongside the Mayor to engage State and Federal leaders and secure essential grant funding.
This leader will combine commercial acumen with a clear understanding of rural governance to ensure the long-term financial sustainability and growth of Cobar Shire.
