About the Organisation

At Life Without Barriers, we’re all about creating safe, supportive environments where children and young people can thrive. Every day, we work closely with families, carers, and communities to help shape brighter futures. From supporting children and families to empowering people with disability, mental health, or those seeking refuge — we’re here to break down barriers and build better lives.

About the Role

Life Without Barriers are looking for Youth Mentors to work with young people in our Specialist Foster Care and CARE School Retention Mentoring programs across the Adelaide regions. Mentors work with the young people (who range in age between 8 – 17 years old) assisting them in a range of ways by modelling and establishing positive relationships with peers and adults; and modelling appropriate behaviours in terms of interpersonal interaction, life skills, employment, education and leisure. Our mentoring sessions occur either after school or on weekends (there may be some flexibility during school holidays). Weekend penalties apply, time and a half for Saturdays and double time for Sundays. Please note: This role is being offered as casual position (minimum 3 hours per week available) however, we cannot guarantee hours every week. We are looking to find mentors specifically located in Northern and Southern Adelaide and the Victor Harbour area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mentors are carefully matched to a child or young person via a range of areas, including personality, interests and hobbies, skill base, as well as matching to gender and location.
  • Mentors are an important part of the care team that supports children and young people under the Guardianship of the Chief Executive living in foster care and residential care, by assisting them in a range of ways:
    • Modelling and establishing positive relationships with peers and adults
    • Providing pathways or linkages to increased opportunities with education, employment and community connections
    • Accessing and facilitating recreational and sporting activities

Requirements

  • Cert III in Child, Youth, Family or Community Services field, or relevant life experience.
  • A current First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain before commencement.
  • Current ‘Safe Environments – Through Their Eyes’ certificate (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement).
  • A current Australian driver’s licence (P2 or above)
  • Reliable & roadworthy vehicle with insurance (Third Party Property at a minimum)

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check, NDIS Check and South Australian Working with Children Check.

Applications close at midnight on 3rd November. We want to employ people who reflect the diversity of our clients to ensure we can support each client's individual needs and wants. We encourage people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and people with disability to apply.

Additional Support

Life Without Barriers offers a dedicated After-Hours Service (AHS) for all Child Youth and Family programs. AHS ensures efficient responses to after-hours events that cannot wait until the next business day, relieving our front-line staff from on-call duties and significantly improving their work-life balance.
