About Kinaltek

Kinaltek is an Australian technology company developing innovative chemical processing and advanced materials technologies.

Our work spans metallothermic reduction, advanced metal and alloy powders, catalysts, silicon-based materials, functional coatings and other novel materials across a portfolio of IP and active projects.

We are looking for a hands‑on Experimental Scientist or R&D Engineer to help develop, validate and scale our proprietary technologies.

This role suits someone who enjoys turning scientific ideas into practical, working processes.

The Role

  • You will design, build and operate experimental systems, run chemical processing trials and help translate laboratory concepts into scalable processes.
  • Develop and optimise thermal, chemical and materials‑transformation processes.
  • Safely work with reactive chemicals, corrosive substances, hazardous materials and high‑temperature systems.
  • Design, assemble, commission and operate laboratory‑ and pilot‑scale equipment from experimentation to process development and validation.
  • Plan and run experiments involving high‑temperature reactions, inorganic materials and powder processing capturing measurable results.
  • Follow, refine and create comprehensive operating and safety documentation for knowledge transfer and staff cross‑training
  • Mentor and develop other staff, whilst being open to undertake training and duties in areas outside your expertise
  • Analyse and interrogate results, troubleshoot technical issues and recommend process improvements based on sound scientific data
  • Select suitable construction materials to address corrosion, temperature service, chemical compatibility and equipment reliability.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records, technical documentation and safe laboratory practices.
  • Contribute to process development, equipment design and technology scale‑up

About You

  • A degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • A demonstrated record of practical experimental R&D, including independently running experiments and solving technical problems.
  • At least eight (8) years of relevant experience, unless you can demonstrate exceptional experimental capability.
  • Strong hands‑on capability in designing, assembling, operating and troubleshooting experimental equipment.
  • Sound knowledge of high‑temperature processing and associated experimental techniques.
  • Working knowledge of inorganic chemistry, materials science, corrosion and chemical compatibility.
  • A strong understanding of laboratory safety and hazardous‑material handling.
  • Initiative, practical problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Full Australian working rights. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship at this moment.

Highly Regarded

  • Industrial R&D experience in chemical processing, metallurgy, advanced materials or process development.
  • Experience with high‑temperature reactors, furnaces, controlled atmospheres, reactive gases or powder processing.
  • Experience progressing experimental processes from laboratory to pilot scale.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with equipment fabrication, instrumentation or process control.
  • Experience with reactive metals, metal oxides, metal chlorides or related inorganic systems.

What will set you apart

We value proven experimental ability, practical ingenuity and the capacity to turn scientific ideas into working processes.

Strong candidates will be able to share examples of systems or processes they have personally designed, built, operated or improved.

Ability and willingness to work collaboratively in a diverse team is a must.

Industrial experience is a strong advantage, but candidates with an outstanding record of hands‑on experimental research in academia or a research institute are also encouraged to apply.
