About Us

The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) began in 1978, when elders and families gathered to claim what was always theirs, their voice, their rights, their country. Today, the KLC amplifies the voices of the Kimberley Aboriginal people; securing native title rights, protecting heritage, managing land and sea, and building opportunities that strengthen culture while shaping futures. Working at the KLC means more than a job. It means walking alongside Traditional Owners, supporting Indigenous-led decision making, and contributing to real, lasting positive change across one of Australia’s most extraordinary landscapes. We value connection, respect knowledge held for tens of thousands of years, and strive to support wellbeing, inclusion, and growth for all who choose to work with us.

About the Role

We are looking for a Lawyer to join our multidisciplinary legal team to help protect native title rights, heritage and the interests of Kimberley Aboriginal people. Working alongside experienced senior lawyers, you’ll provide practical, high-quality advice to prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs), native title holders and claimants on future acts, native title determinations and compensation, heritage protection and post-determination matters. This is meaningful, hands-on legal work. You’ll meet with clients on Country and in remote communities across the Kimberley, represent native title parties before the National Native Title Tribunal, assist with Federal Court proceedings and work with counsel, anthropologists, historians and linguists to deliver strong outcomes. Based in Broome with frequent travel across one of Australia’s most extraordinary regions, this 12-month full-time role offers the opportunity to build your legal career while contributing to work that supports Traditional Owners to get back Country, look after Country and get control of the future.

Your work will be varied but primarily include:

  • Advise PBCs, native title holders and claimants on native title, compensation, future acts and heritage matters.
  • Travel throughout the Kimberley to take instructions and provide clear, culturally respectful legal advice.
  • Represent clients before the National Native Title Tribunal and support Federal Court proceedings.
  • Research emerging legal and policy issues affecting Traditional Owners.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and build strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and expert consultants.

About you

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Experience in native title, property, land management, mining, corporations, contracts, environmental law or another relevant field.
  • Knowledge of relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, Federal Courts and Tribunals, native title and Aboriginal heritage frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Highly organised and able to manage deadlines, work independently and contribute to a high-performing multidisciplinary team.
  • Two or more years of post-admission experience is desirable.

If you’re a thoughtful, collaborative lawyer who wants your work to have genuine impact, we’d love to hear from you.
