A day in this role
No two shifts look the same, and that's part of the appeal. You'll be supporting children and young people with a disability, each with their own communication styles, personality, history, strengths and goals.
Some shifts are quiet and focused. You might be working one-on-one with two children who are non-verbal, learning how each of them communicates and helping with personal care, toileting, nappy changes and hygiene, always with dignity and respect.
Other shifts are full of energy. You might be looking after five children aged 3 to 10, guiding them through household routines, building everyday life skills, or simply being there to listen. Sometimes a child's behaviour will be challenging. For many of the children we support, behaviour is a form of communication. It might be their way of telling you they're overwhelmed, in pain, frustrated, tired, anxious, or unable to find the words for what they need. Your role is to look beyond what you're seeing and ask what the child is trying to tell you.
You won't be doing this alone. You'll have the support of a team, clear behaviour support plans for each child, and training in positive, respectful, least-restrictive approaches. We'll work with you to understand each child's triggers, what helps them regulate, and what works best for them as an individual.
Your job is to keep everyone safe while protecting the trust you've built with that child.
You might be a great fit if you:
- Genuinely enjoy working with children and young people
- Can build trust while maintaining professional boundaries and follow individual support plans
- Communicate clearly and listen without judgement
- Can manage challenging situations and taking appropriate steps
- Can bring warmth, humour, structure and positivity to the home
- Understand that small moments can have a big impact
You'll Bring
- A current Australian driver's licence (minimum P2).
- A Working with Children Blue Card and NDIS Worker Screening Check, or willingness to obtain them.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
- A completed or currently enrolled in a minimum Certificate IV in Child Services, Disability Support or a Diploma in nursing.
- Experience supporting people with complex behaviours, including using trauma-informed, person-centred approaches and maintaining safety during escalated situations.
- Availability and flexibility to work a variety of shifts across a 24/7 roster (days, nights, sleepovers, weekends)/ including the ability to complete a minimum of two sleepover shifts per fortnight. Common roster of care: 8am β 4pm, 4pm -8am (sleepover 10pm-6am).
