The Wangaratta Livestock Exchange (WLE) is a purpose-built facility serving the region’s livestock industry. Our focus is on safe, efficient operations, quality facilities and professional service to livestock agents, producers, buyers and other stakeholders.
About the role
Reporting to the General Manager, you’ll support the day-to-day operation of the WLE, working across livestock handling, sale-day activities, animal care, site presentation and general maintenance. No two days are quite the same, and you’ll have the opportunity to use a broad range of practical skills.
- Assist with livestock arrivals, movement, pen allocation and general handling
- Support sale-day activities, including scanning, weighing and livestock movements
- Attend to feeding, animal husbandry, agistment and livestock welfare requirements
- Keep pens, troughs, grounds and facilities clean, safe and well maintained
- Undertake general repairs, mowing, weed management and other site maintenance tasks
- Operate relevant plant and equipment, such as a bobcat, backhoe, mower and motorbike, where competent and authorised
- Assist with monitoring and upkeep of the standpipe and selling pond
- Work cooperatively with livestock agents, contractors, customers and the wider WLE team.
What we’re looking for
- Experience working with livestock, ideally in saleyards, farming or a similar rural environment
- A strong commitment to animal welfare, workplace safety and safe livestock handling
- A hands-on approach, practical maintenance skills and confidence working outdoors
- Good communication skills, reliability and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- The ability to manage competing priorities and undertake the physical requirements of the position.
- Experience operating machinery and familiarity with saleyard processes will be highly regarded, but we encourage applicants with transferable rural and practical skills to apply.
Part-time hours that can work for you
This is a permanent part-time position, anticipated to be around three days per week, with flexibility to accommodate the right candidate. Ideally, you’ll be available on Mondays and Tuesdays to assist with livestock arrivals, preparation and sale-day operations. The additional day/s and working hours can be negotiated to suit both you and the operational needs of WLE. Some additional hours, occasional after-hours work and participation in on-call arrangements may be required.
Please note: Only those applicants shortlisted for interview will be contacted.
