Join a large federal government department that offers a high-performing environment and ample opportunities for career development and internal progression.
The Opportunity
We are seeking multiple APS6 Financial Accountants to join a high-profile department. These positions are available as S26 permanent transfers for existing APS employees, or as 12-month non-ongoing contracts for external candidates. Given these are ongoing vacancies, there is a strong possibility of extension or conversion to permanency following the initial 12-month period. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates with a solid foundation in financial accounting principles and a valid security clearance. Experience in financial reporting or asset accounting is highly desirable. The department fosters a culture of growth, offering opportunities for higher duties and acting roles for motivated individuals. Hybrid working arrangements (including two days working from home per week) and flexible working hours are available.
The Role
As an APS6 Financial Accountant, your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the department’s external financial reporting functions, including journal preparation, reconciliations, balance sheet management, investigation of reconciling items, and financial statement analysis
- Providing technical financial advice and ensuring compliance with financial management frameworks, governance requirements, and risk management obligations
- Analysing financial data to identify issues, improve reporting accuracy, and support informed decision making
- Building effective relationships with auditors, business units, procurement teams, and systems specialists to ensure the timely delivery of financial reporting outcomes
The Ideal Person
You are a technically proficient accountant with relevant tertiary qualifications. CA or CPA qualification, or currently working towards one, would be highly desirable. You have a proactive approach, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage large volumes of financial data. Most importantly, you can use your influencing skills to resolve accounting issues effectively, particularly within a Federal Government environment. Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capability are essential. You will likely come from one of the following backgrounds:
- Experience within a Big 4 or mid-tier accounting firm, specialising in financial accounting or external audit
- Experience as a Financial Accountant, or in a more senior financial accounting role, within a large and complex organisation
- An existing APS6 Financial Accountant seeking a new challenge through an S26 transfer
To be eligible, you must be an Australian citizen with an existing Baseline or higher security clearance.
