The opportunity
Hitec is seeking a full-time Painting Trades Worker to join its team at Pinkenba QLD 4008.
This is a hands-on trade role covering surface preparation and the application of industrial protective coatings to pressure vessels, process piping, process skids and structural steel.
You will work alongside the workshop, quality and project teams to deliver a durable, compliant finish to client specification and to AS/NZS 2312.1.
Key responsibilities
- Set up the blast and paint bay, including scaffolding, ladders, work platforms, drop sheets and screens, and mask flanges, machined faces, nameplates and adjacent surfaces.
- Prepare steel surfaces by removing mill scale, rust, old coatings, weld spatter and contamination, using abrasive blast cleaning to the specified class in accordance with AS 1627.4, and grinding or hand tools where blasting is not practical.
- Check and record surface profile, cleanliness, dew point, humidity and steel temperature before coating, and confirm conditions remain within specification.
- Select, mix, thin and tint paints and protective coatings in accordance with product data sheets, and match specified colours.
- Apply primers, intermediate coats and topcoats by airless spray, brush and roller, including stripe coating of welds, edges and bolt holes, across inorganic zinc, epoxy and polyurethane systems.
- Measure and record wet and dry film thickness, and rectify runs, sags, dry spray, holidays and coating damage.
- Clean, set up and maintain blast pots, airless pumps, guns, hoses, filters and breathing air equipment; keep work areas tidy and manage spent abrasive, waste and empty containers correctly.
- Complete coating records and inspection and test plan hold points, present work for inspection by quality and client representatives, and touch up coatings after handling, transport and site installation.
- Apply Hitec’s quality and WHS systems, including the safe work method statements for abrasive blasting, spray painting, working at heights and confined space entry.
Qualifications, skills and experience
- Certificate III in Surface Preparation and Coating Application (MSM30216) or Certificate III in Painting and Decorating (CPC30620), or a directly relevant equivalent qualification comparable to the Australian standard.
At least three years of relevant experience may be considered in place of a formal qualification.
- Demonstrated experience applying industrial protective coatings to structural steel, pressure vessels or piping.
- Competent and safe operation of abrasive blasting and airless spray equipment.
- Ability to read and work to coating specifications, product data sheets and inspection and test plans, and to record surface preparation and film thickness results accurately.
- Sound knowledge of coating systems, curing times, overcoat windows, and common coating defects and their repair.
- Construction induction (white) card, the ability to meet fitness for work requirements for supplied-air respiratory protection, and strong safety awareness around dust, solvents, noise and confined spaces.
Desirable
- Experience in mining, refinery, petrochemical, oil and gas or coal seam gas projects.
- Working at heights, elevated work platform and confined space tickets, forklift licence, or dogging and rigging ticket.
- Experience with client and third-party coating inspection, including testing to AS 3894.
- Experience coating modular process skids, pressure vessels, high-pressure piping and structural supports.
