We're looking for an experienced Leading Hand Carpenter to join our team on an exciting, large-scale waterfront residential project in Newport. This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled and motivated carpenter who enjoys challenging, high-quality residential construction and is ready to take on greater responsibility on site. Working closely with the Site Foreman, you'll play a key role in the day-to-day delivery of the project, leading by example, supporting other carpenters and apprentices, and ensuring works are completed to Hatch's high standards. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is equally comfortable on the tools and helping coordinate the team around them.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Site Foreman to coordinate daily site activities and maintain progress.
  • Undertake all aspects of carpentry, from structural works, formwork and framing through to detailed finishes and fit-off.
  • Interpret architectural, structural and construction drawings accurately.
  • Assist with site set-out, planning and preparation for upcoming trades.
  • Lead and mentor carpenters and apprentices, setting a strong example in workmanship and productivity.
  • Coordinate materials, deliveries and work areas to ensure the team can operate efficiently.
  • Liaise effectively with subcontractors, site management and the broader Hatch team.
  • Take responsibility for site activities in the Foreman's absence, as required.
  • Maintain high standards of site presentation, safety and quality control.
  • Assist with site reporting, diaries and construction management software.

About you

  • 5+ years' experience in residential carpentry, ideally including high-end, architecturally designed homes.
  • Strong experience across structural carpentry, framing, formwork and detailed finishing.
  • Excellent ability to read and interpret architectural and structural plans.
  • Previous experience supervising or mentoring other carpenters and apprentices.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to anticipate what's needed next on site.
  • A sharp eye for detail and a genuine commitment to quality workmanship.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach and a willingness to get stuck in.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with site teams and subcontractors.
  • A sound understanding of WHS requirements and safe work practices.
