Guide Dogs Queensland is a leading provider of services to Queenslanders living with low vision or blindness. Voted one of Australia’s most trusted charities, and with thanks to the ongoing support of the community, we help people with low vision or blindness reach their goals, helping them lead an independent life of their choosing. Our services are all tailored to ensure everyone can fulfil their potential to live a life of independence, participation, inclusion and wellbeing.
The role
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Canine Attendant to join our team on a casual basis at our Guide Dogs Queensland Breeding and Training Centre in Bald Hills!
Our Canine Attendants play an important role in creating and maintaining a high-quality kennel environment that supports the health, wellbeing and development of the dogs in our care. From caring for puppies and breeding dogs through to supporting dogs in training, you'll help ensure every dog receives the highest standard of care.
Canine Attendants perform general canine duties and tasks including administrative tasks relating to the health and general husbandry of the dogs in our care.
Your duties will include:
Feeding, exercising and toileting dogs.
Bathing, grooming, weighing and conducting routine health checks.
Observing and recording changes in dogs’ health or behaviour and raising concerns promptly.
Cleaning and maintaining kennels, equipment and facilities.
Maintaining accurate care records and completing related administrative tasks.
Working with colleagues to prioritise daily tasks and respond to changing care needs.
Our facility operates year-round, including weekends and public holidays. As part of a rotating 7-day roster, you'll need flexibility to work a range of shifts including early mornings, evenings, overnights and weekends.
Candidates available on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays will be highly regarded. Availability for additional days and overnight shifts is also desirable.
Typical shift times are:
6:00am – 1:30pm
12:30pm – 8:00pm
Occasional shorter shifts (approximately 4 hours) may be available depending on operational requirements.
To complete initial training, you must be available to work 3-5 weekdays per week during your first 4-5 weeks of employment.
About you
We're looking for someone with a positive attitude, strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to learn. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility and the ability to pivot quickly as priorities change. You’ll be adaptable in your approach, able to consider the circumstances and use sound judgement when priorities change, while following established care procedures and seeking guidance when needed.
While experience working with dogs is highly regarded, it is not essential. If you're passionate about working with dogs and are looking to build a long-term career in the canine industry, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands‑on experience.
This role offers an excellent entry point into further career pathways with Guide Dogs Queensland. Many of our team members have progressed into canine specialist roles and other training and development roles across the organisation.
Our successful candidate will demonstrate:
Certificate III in Animal Studies or relevant experience working in kennels, veterinary clinics or boarding facilities (highly regarded).
Open Driver’s Licence.
Q fever vaccination (highly regarded).
Strong attention to detail and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
An adaptable approach, with the ability to manage changing priorities and consider the needs of individual dogs and situations.
A willingness to learn, take feedback on board and work collaboratively.
Flexibility with working hours and availability, as this role operates within a 24/7 environment.
Salary packaging options - up to $18,550 tax free per year.
Generous Parental Leave policy.
A rewarding career that makes a real difference.
Great location, beautiful campus.
Wellness initiatives and an Employee Assistance Program for staff and their families.
