Business Development Representative (Outbound Calling), Part-Time

Help Australian businesses grow, one real conversation at a time.

Growth Potential partners with ambitious business owners to help them build businesses capable of substantial and sustainable growth.

We're looking for an experienced, warm and commercially minded person to join our outbound team and start quality conversations with business owners and senior decision-makers.

This is not a script-reading role. We want someone who talks with people, not at them. Someone who listens, asks good questions and can hold a natural business conversation with whoever picks up the phone, at any level of an organisation, from reception through to the owner, and leave them feeling the call was worth their time.

Initially this is a part-time position (approximately 2 to 3 days per week), with the expectation that it will grow into a full-time role as activity and client demand grow.

The Opportunity

Your role is to create quality business conversations that lead to meetings.

Sometimes you'll introduce business owners to Growth Potential and arrange meetings for our advisory team. More often you'll work as part of our clients' teams, speaking with their prospective customers and arranging meetings for the business owner or a senior leader in that business.

No two campaigns are the same. You'll learn different industries quickly, understand what each client does well and find the people who need it.

This is a phone-first role. You'll use email, LinkedIn and spreadsheets every day, and we do a lot of direct mail, so many of your calls follow up something the prospect has already received. The phone is where the work happens.

What We've Learned About Who Does Well Here

We've been running this outbound function for a few months and reviewing the calls closely. The conversations that turn into meetings have a few things in common:

  • They reach the right person. A surprising number of calls start with someone who has moved on or doesn't make the decision. The best callers find out early and politely work their way to the person who does.

  • They treat receptionists and gatekeepers as people who can help. A friendly, specific request gets a name, a direct number and a postal address far more often than a vague one.

  • They ask one more question after a "no". Not an argument, just genuine curiosity about what would need to change. Then they accept the answer gracefully.

  • They hold the next step. "I'll call you" is not a next step. A day and a time, agreed on the call, is.

  • They sound like themselves. We give you a tested structure and the research on each person. You bring a genuine, human conversation that follows the structure, goes with the flow and still reaches the outcome.

  • They keep the gaps short. Quality conversations are what move the numbers. The time that matters isn't the length of each call, it's the time between calls, and we set things up so you can go straight from one call to the next.

What Success Looks Like

This is a highly active outbound role. Expect to spend most of your working day (around 80%) on the phone: calling prospects, following up, qualifying opportunities and arranging meetings.

You'll start each day with a prepared call list in a spreadsheet, with background on each person: who they are, what their business does and why we're calling. AI-assisted systems manage the flow of information through our outbound process behind the scenes, so your time goes into conversations rather than admin. Your job is to pick up the phone, get going and keep going.

The remaining time is spent:

  • Recording an outcome and a short note on every conversation in your call sheet.

  • Coordinating follow-up across phone, email, LinkedIn and post.

  • Reviewing calls with the team and testing what works.

  • Attending campaign planning sessions.

If you enjoy speaking with people, take satisfaction from turning a cold call into a warm conversation, and like seeing your effort show up as meetings in the diary, you'll love this role.

If you're looking for a role that's primarily administration, account management or marketing, this probably isn't the right fit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make outbound calls to business owners and senior decision-makers, often following up direct mail, email or LinkedIn activity.

  • Work through reception, switchboards and call screening to reach the right person, confirming names, direct numbers and postal addresses along the way.

  • Qualify interest and book meetings for:

    • Growth Potential advisors and partnership team members.

    • Business owners and senior leaders within our client businesses.

  • Represent several clients across different industries, learning each one well enough to speak confidently about it.

  • Handle objections and redirects with curiosity rather than pressure.

  • Record every call outcome, note and follow-up action accurately in the call sheet.

  • Capture market intelligence, pain points and objections so campaigns keep improving.

  • Contribute ideas on messaging, targeting and call approach based on what you hear on the phone.

We're Looking For Someone Who...

  • Genuinely enjoys talking with people and is interested in what they have to say.

  • Is comfortable speaking with anyone, from reception to the business owner, as an equal.

  • Listens more than they talk, and asks good questions.

  • Builds rapport naturally, including with receptionists and assistants.

  • Stays curious after a "no" and knows when to let it go.

  • Picks up the phone again straight after a tough call. Rejection is part of the job and doesn't slow you down.

  • Self-starts. You don't need every detail perfect before you begin, and you don't need someone checking in to keep the momentum.

  • Is resourceful. If a number is wrong or a contact has left, you find another way in.

  • Takes care with the details that matter: names said correctly, notes written up, follow-ups made when promised.

  • Is coachable and open to reviewing calls together, and will work a tested call structure consistently so we can learn what works.

  • Can work independently while contributing to a small, close team.

Experience

We're looking for at least two to three years of experience in a client-facing or customer-facing role of any kind, rather than someone looking for their first job. It doesn't need to be sales, it doesn't need to be full-time and the industry doesn't matter. What matters is that you've spent real time talking with customers or clients and know how to hold a genuine conversation.

Backgrounds that often translate well include reception and front-of-house, hospitality, retail, customer service, recruitment, account management, real estate or property management, trades and services businesses, or a client-facing part-time job alongside study.

Outbound calling or appointment-setting experience is a plus, not a requirement. A track record of building relationships is.

Ideal Attributes

  • Warm, natural and confident on the phone.

  • Strong emotional intelligence.

  • Positive, resilient and self-motivated.

  • Persistent without being pushy.

  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication.

  • Comfortable with spreadsheets and technology generally.

  • Reliable, with consistent availability on your working days.

A DISC profile with stronger Influence (I) traits, supported by some Dominance (D) or Steadiness (S), would likely suit the role well, although attitude and coachability matter far more than any profile.

Working Arrangements

  • Part-time (approximately 2 to 3 days per week), on consistent days.

  • Ideally Tuesday to Thursday. Mornings are our most productive calling time.

  • Primarily based in our Sydney CBD office (Level 26, 1 Bligh Street).

  • Flexible working arrangements by agreement.

Remuneration

  • Competitive remuneration, discussed based on experience.

  • Performance-based commission linked to qualified meetings that are attended, not simply booked.

  • A genuine path to a full-time role as the business and client portfolio grow.

Why Join Growth Potential?

This is an opportunity to help build something from the ground up.

You'll work directly alongside experienced business advisors who have built, scaled and exited businesses themselves. Your ideas won't disappear into a corporate hierarchy. They'll shape how we build our outbound capability.

You'll gain exposure to businesses across a wide range of industries, contribute to real growth strategies and help create meaningful commercial opportunities for both Growth Potential and our clients.

If you're an experienced communicator who loves a real conversation, wants to be trusted with responsibility and would like to see the direct impact of your work, we'd love to hear from you.
