Greenfields Executive Recruitment & Search is partnering with an established organisation in the private health insurance sector to appoint an experienced Head of Legal.
This is an opportunity for a commercially minded legal leader to take responsibility for the day-to-day management and ongoing development of an in-house legal function. Working closely with the Chief Legal Officer and Company Secretary, you will play an important role in shaping legal strategy, managing risk and providing practical advice across a broad range of commercial, corporate and regulatory matters.
The role offers an attractive combination of people leadership, hands-on legal work and strategic business involvement. You will work directly with senior executives and key stakeholders, contributing to business transformation, new products, partnerships and operational improvements while developing the capability and effectiveness of the legal team.
The role
- Legal leadership and team development: Lead the day-to-day operations of the legal function, managing and mentoring legal professionals, setting priorities and fostering a collaborative, commercially focused team culture.
- Commercial and corporate legal matters: Provide strategic and practical advice across corporate and commercial law, competition and consumer law, privacy, intellectual property, employment, technology and other matters relevant to a regulated business.
- Strategic projects and business transformation: Partner with senior stakeholders on new products, commercial partnerships, strategic transactions and business initiatives, ensuring legal and regulatory considerations are addressed throughout their development and implementation.
- Regulatory compliance and legal risk: Advise on complex regulatory obligations, emerging legislative developments, disputes, investigations and remediation matters, working closely with risk and compliance teams to manage legal exposure.
- Commercial contracts and external counsel: Oversee the drafting and negotiation of significant commercial agreements, manage external legal advisers and contribute to effective legal budget and resource management.
- Legal function improvement: Strengthen legal processes, systems and service delivery, including the use of technology, knowledge management and practical tools to improve efficiency and build legal capability across the organisation.
About you
You will be an experienced commercial or corporate lawyer with substantial post-qualification experience gained in private practice, in-house or a combination of both. Importantly, you will have operated at a senior level, with demonstrated experience leading legal service delivery, managing complex matters and developing legal professionals.
You will bring broad commercial legal expertise, together with a strong understanding of the challenges facing organisations operating in highly regulated environments. Your ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives, exercise sound judgement and provide clear, pragmatic advice to senior executives will be essential.
A confident and collaborative leader, you will enjoy building relationships across the business, mentoring others and contributing to strategic decision-making. You will bring strong drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, alongside the ability to manage competing priorities in an evolving regulatory environment.
Experience within private health insurance will be highly regarded, particularly knowledge of the Private Health Insurance Act and associated regulatory requirements. Candidates from broader APRA-regulated financial services or insurance environments are also encouraged to apply.
Exposure to privacy, cyber security, technology, artificial intelligence, operational resilience, regulatory remediation, M&A or corporate governance will be advantageous.
