Manager level technical leadership position. Work across George Fisher U/G and other growth assets in MT Isa. Considerable salary and benefits package - FIFO or Residential.
The operation: George Fisher Mine (GFM) is a large-scale underground zinc-lead-silver operation based in Mt Isa, QLD. George Fisher is one of Australia's most geotechnically challenging underground base-metal mines because it combines a deep, high-stress environment with a large, steeply dipping orebody that is mined using longhole open stoping. The resulting technical challenges would be an attractive challenge to a seasoned geotechnical professional. George Fisher has a long mine life and is a key strategic asset for Glencore globally. Glencore is also progressing the Blackstar open pit project in Mt Isa. This brownfield expansion is scheduled to move into execution in 2027.
The role: The Geotechnical Practice Lead works within the Technical Services team to support the Geotechnical Superintendent in delivering safe, practical and value-adding geotechnical outcomes across the operation. The role provides technical leadership across geotechnical monitoring, excavation stability, support design, stope design guideline optimisation, risk management and continuous improvement. This role is suited to a highly capable geotechnical engineer who combines strong technical depth, strategic thinking, practical operational understanding and a commitment to improving both geotechnical quality and team capability. Ideally the position would be residentially based in Mt Isa with an attractive package on offer to attract the right person. However, consideration may be given to other arrangements pending your personal circumstances and capability.
Experience required:
- Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline.
- Significant underground metalliferous mining experience in geotechnical engineering roles.
- Demonstrated experience in ground control, excavation performance, support design, stope and development geotechnical assessment, and monitoring systems.
- Strong understanding of underground mining methods and the interaction between geology, stress, excavation geometry, sequencing and support performance.
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical risk assessment, TARPs, inspections, instrumentation and reconciliation processes.
- Proven ability to apply geotechnical analysis to practical operational decisions.
- Experience leading technical teams, mentoring engineers and setting clear standards and expectations.
Benefits on offer:
- Permanent position working directly for Glencore.
- Competitive salary package including 13% super and generous incentive scheme.
- For those considering residential Mt Isa housing and vehicle would be provided or there is FIFO available and we can be flexible on roster.
- Access to training and professional development.
- Opportunity to work for a large mining company with opportunities to advance your career domestically and internationally.
- Visa sponsorship available for suitably qualified candidates.
