Gazette is a media company building a network of local newsrooms across Australia. We make high-quality local news freely available in the formats and on the channels where people already spend their time, so communities can connect with, contribute to and navigate the big issues where they live. We are fully independent and funded by a mix of advertising, philanthropy and reader donations. Our newsrooms are small, digitally native and fast-moving. Reporters here have real room to try things and to shape the voice of their masthead.
The role involves driving the launch of a new masthead in Perth, south of the river. This is our first WA title, covering a large territory including South Perth, Victoria Park, Belmont, Fremantle, East Fremantle, Melville, Cockburn, Kwinana, Rockingham, Canning, Gosnells, Armadale and Serpentine-Jarrahdale. There are thousands of stories in the area, from local characters to the big questions shaping the regionβs future. You will publish free local news, lifestyle and culture across newsletters, social, video and our website, focusing on practical, useful information and clear reporting on underreported issues such as climate and energy, cost of living, housing, infrastructure, education, healthcare and essential services.
Day to day, you will:
- Find and report local stories that matter, across news, lifestyle and culture, from everyday community issues to public interest work.
- Work across formats, from short explainers and newsletters to social posts and vertical video.
- Spend real time in the community, building relationships with locals, businesses, community groups and decision makers.
- Shape the editorial voice of a young masthead, and try formats and ideas nobody has tried yet.
- Work with our editorial and audience teams to grow reach.
You will report to Brad Esposito, Editorial Director, and join a team of 10 reporters across nine mastheads. You can see our other mastheads at gazettenews.au.
Who you are:
- You live in Perth's south, or you are ready to move there, and you have a feel for its culture, politics, economy and everyday life.
- You are curious, organised and reliable, and comfortable with several stories on the go.
- You like talking to people from all walks of life, and you want to tell their stories well.
- You want to make complicated things useful for a local audience, and you are up for learning video production with support from the team.
- Journalism experience is a big plus, but if you have strong writing, storytelling or content creation skills, plus real local knowledge, youβll get our attention.
What we offer:
- A full-time role with competitive salary, aligned with experience.
- Best-in-class training and support on traditional reporting as well as video and digital storytelling, from industry leaders and veterans with a track record of success.
- An ambitious team that values feedback, experimentation and learning.
- A genuinely supportive culture: low ego, high trust, collaborative and kind.
- The chance to help define what news can look like in 2027 and beyond.
