The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), the research arm of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), is seeking a Natural Resource Economist. Our team of economists and scientists values analytical quality, evidence-based approaches, and constructive feedback, while supporting a healthy work-life balance.
The Fisheries and Forestry Economics Team is hiring to improve the economic evidence base for fisheries management. In the coming year, ABARES will extend its Economic Condition Index methodology across Commonwealth-managed fisheries and develop new methods for estimating economic performance where conventional survey data are unavailable. Integrating biological, catch, cost, and market information, the team aims to generate more timely indicators of profitability and sustainability and develop tools for productivity measurement across Australian fisheries and aquaculture industries.
The successful candidate will be able to work across both Fisheries and Forestry Economics teams. The Forestry Economics Team focuses on quantitative analysis using administrative data for industry reporting and analysis, alongside ongoing projects such as BLADE and SAFE, which examine the performance of the processing sector and land use change modelling.
Duties may include:
- Conducting literature reviews and developing analytical approaches
- Data gathering and analysis
- Writing code for data processing and reporting
- Collaboration within teams and providing assistance to team members
- Stakeholder engagement with government, industry, and other bodies
- Report writing, including producing technical and non-technical summaries
The position requires professional experience as an economist and a tertiary qualification in economics or a related discipline. Flexible employment arrangements are available, and the recruitment process may be used for future vacancies of a similar nature within an eighteen-month period.
