At EMtek, we’re a multidisciplinary engineering team built on strong values, ethics, and expertise. We provide professional, technical, and project management services across structural, mechanical, process, piping, civil, electrical, instrumentation, safety, control, communications, and software engineering.
With more than 140 talented people across offices in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, and Ballarat, plus site offices throughout Victoria and Western Australia, we work seamlessly across locations to deliver results. Our vision is to tackle industry challenges with agile, intelligent, and innovative solutions, supporting projects from concept through to operation. We work across diverse industries including resources, materials handling, infrastructure, power, renewables, and decarbonisation, partnering with leading clients such as Roy Hill/Hancock, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, and Newmont.
We are pursuing a significant underground development and infrastructure upgrade project for a major Australian gold producer, and we are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to help us win it and then deliver it. You will be central to bid development - shaping the electrical scope, building the estimate, developing the execution methodology and helping put the proposal in front of the client. On award, you carry that scope into delivery as the senior electrical engineer on the project, taking the design from concept through to IFC and into construction and commissioning support.
It suits someone who knows underground mine electrical infrastructure - reticulation down a decline, underground substations, ventilation and dewatering, earthing and earth fault protection in an underground environment. Based in our Brisbane office, reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager.
- Lead electrical and instrumentation input into bids, proposals and tender submissions - scope definition, estimate development, execution methodology and technical narrative
- Develop the assumptions, qualifications, exclusions and risk register that sit behind the price
- Contribute to win themes, client presentations, tender clarifications and interview stages
- Take underground electrical designs from concept through to detailed IFC deliverables
- Design underground power reticulation
- Prepare power system studies for an extending underground network - load flow, voltage drop over long reticulation runs, fault level, protection coordination, arc flash and earth fault limitation
- Design earthing, earth leakage and earth continuity monitoring systems appropriate to underground operation
- Prepare designs and calculations
- Produce the full deliverable set - SLDs, schematics, loop and termination diagrams, cable schedules and calculations, equipment lists, datasheets, specifications, vendor packs, functional descriptions, ITPs, O&M manuals
- Support configuration and commissioning of protection devices, VSDs, instrumentation and control systems
- Coordinate with mechanical, civil, structural, ventilation and mining engineering disciplines, and with the client’s site electrical team
- Provide technical review and mentoring across a growing electrical and controls team
- Site visits to underground operations as required, and a visible safety focus throughout
Skills and experience - essential
- Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering
- Minimum 8 years’ electrical engineering experience, including at least 4 years designing or delivering underground mine electrical infrastructure. Hard rock metalliferous is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated underground reticulation design experience - HV distribution underground, cable selection and sizing for mining service, underground substations, switching and protection, earthing and earth fault protection in an underground environment
- Demonstrated bid and proposal experience - you have built electrical estimates, written technical proposal content and owned a scope through a competitive tender, not just contributed a cable schedule to someone else’s submission
- Proven design engineer across switchrooms, switchboards, MCCs, LV and HV, VSDs, transformers, lightning protection and earthing systems, with calculations and documentation you can evidence
- Working knowledge of AS/NZS 4871 and the Australian mining electrical regulatory framework
- Ability to interface with clients and stakeholders at all levels
Skills and experience - desirable
- Gold sector experience, and familiarity with the operating practices of Australian producers
- Underground communications
- Power system modelling (ETAP, PowerFactory or similar)
- Control systems exposure across SCADA, PLC and RTU platforms, and industrial communications and IP networks
- Experience across a range of commodities including gold, copper, lithium and iron ore
- Construction, commissioning or operations experience underground
Why you’ll love it here
- A professional but relaxed environment with flexible work arrangements
- Friendly, down-to-earth team with supportive colleagues and management
- Long-term stability with engaging projects in the pipeline
- A central Brisbane office location with great cafes and amenities nearby
- Opportunities to work from various company state office locations
- Career development opportunities in technical engineering design, project and people management
- Exposure to projects across Resources, Minerals Processing, Materials Handling, Infrastructure, Power & Renewables and Decarbonisation
