A pastoral business operating a group of cattle stations in remote northern Western Australia needs two qualified mechanics who can keep its fleet working without a dealership down the road. Its trucks, motorbikes, vehicles and station machinery all depend on this role, and the position is advertised under Broome.

The employer is looking for people who will stay: sponsorship is available for skilled and eligible applicants who meet the criteria in the advertisement, and only those offering a long-term commitment are asked to apply. Conditions are demanding. The climate brings very high temperatures and humidity, and the business may carry out alcohol and drug testing at times, with no tolerance for intoxication on the job.

Employers like this one shortlist on evidence, so show your diesel or heavy vehicle trade, licence classes and any time spent fixing gear far from suppliers.

  • Plan and complete routine services and maintenance on station vehicles and machinery
  • Diagnose and repair faults across the fleet
  • Answer callouts and deal with problems as they happen
  • Operate machinery and tools safely, and supervise and train station staff on daily checks and services
  • Record the parts used for reordering and keep frequently needed parts in stock

Requirements:

  • Trade qualified in Diesel / Heavy Vehicle Mechanics
  • At least 2 years' experience after qualifying
  • Background as a mechanic in a similar role
  • A genuine passion for working and living on a station
  • Able to use diagnostic and test equipment safely on all of the company's fleet
  • C Class driver's licence (essential)
  • Motorcycle licence, HR or MC licence would be an advantage
  • Uses tools and equipment confidently, efficiently and safely
  • Works well independently and within a team in a remote location
  • Develops innovative solutions when parts or tools are not readily on hand
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, good communication and a positive attitude would be an advantage, along with fitness for high temperatures and high humidity
