The Mechanical Engineer will take Elquip's equipment from customer requirement to finished machine. The role covers designing new units and modifications, producing the drawing packages our fabricators and fitters build from, and supporting testing, commissioning and customers on site. The role works closely with our factory manager, electrical engineering technicians and workshop staff.
Key responsibilities
Design and develop mobile, skid-mounted and trailer-mounted equipment for underground mining and tunnelling, including shotcrete booms and sprayers, concrete pumps, mixer bodies, charging units and service vehicle bodies.
Produce 3D models, general arrangement drawings and detailed fabrication drawings for welded steel structures, frames, booms, tanks and hoppers, and prepare bills of materials for the workshop.
Design hydraulic and pneumatic circuits for pumping, boom and drive functions, and size and select pumps, valves, cylinders, motors and hoses.
Carry out structural, load and stability calculations, including FEA where required, for frames, booms, lifting points and mounting structures.
Modify and customise new and imported equipment to suit each mine or tunnel site's specifications, including guarding, access, fire suppression, lighting and site-specific attachments.
Ensure designs meet the NSW Mining Design Guidelines (e.g. MDG 15 for mobile plant and MDG 41 for fluid power), AS 4024 machinery safety and WHS (Mines) requirements.
Prepare design risk assessments and compliance documentation.
Support fabrication, assembly, function testing and commissioning in the Rydalmere workshop, and resolve build issues with the workshop team.
Visit customer mine and tunnel sites to gather requirements, commission equipment and investigate field failures, and turn the findings into design improvements.
Prepare parts lists and technical specifications, and provide cost and technical input for customer quotations.

Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor) and in preparing fabrication drawings to AS 1100 (essential).
Experience in hydraulic system design and component selection (highly desirable).
Working knowledge of MDG 15, MDG 41, AS 4024 and WHS (Mines) requirements (highly desirable).
Understanding of welded steel fabrication, steel grades and manufacturing methods.
Exposure to battery-electric vehicles or drive systems (desirable).
Construction Induction (White Card) (essential).
Ability to work hands-on alongside fabricators, fitters and electrical technicians in a small team, and to manage your own design tasks to deadlines.
