Australia's publicly funded national broadcaster providing independent news, emergency information, and public-interest content across TV, radio, and digital platforms.

The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) is Australia's national public broadcaster. Its Product & Technology (P&T) division is responsible for delivering the technology and services that enable the ABC to fulfil its creative, strategic and business goals — from keeping programs and services on-air and online, to delivering key projects and setting technology strategy and architecture.

This is a fixed-term contract of approximately 11 months at full-time hours, based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. You would sit within the Digital Product team and report to the Product Design Research Lead. The role exists to apply human-centred design practices to improve the experience of both audiences and content makers across the ABC's diverse range of digital products and systems.

What you would do:

  • Plan and run complex qualitative research — including interviews, contextual inquiries and co-design sessions with multiple stakeholders — then analyse and synthesise findings.
  • Work across multiple product and research streams, applying systems thinking to identify patterns and contribute to organisation-wide outcomes.
  • Create design artefacts such as current and future state journey maps, service blueprints, behavioural archetypes or personas, and roadmaps to communicate research and point the way forward.
  • Combine quantitative research, analytics, industry trends, market research and emerging technologies to spot opportunities for service optimisation and innovation.
  • Champion employee and audience needs across the organisation, influencing stakeholders to centre those needs in their decisions.
  • Help build and improve research operations, with a focus on tooling, repositories and tagging that make research easy to find and reuse.
  • Contribute to how audience value is measured across digital products, helping to define, collect and interpret measures such as satisfaction and ease of use.

What they are looking for:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications, or equivalent skills and industry experience, in service or strategic design.
  • Proven experience delivering long-term service design projects in a large, complex technology environment.
  • Strong knowledge of human-centred design, including a well-developed understanding of the design process, research methods and delivering better outcomes for audiences and the business.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences and to foster an open, creative approach within and across teams.
  • Strong project management skills and experience working in agile environments.

The role is based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane (candidate's choice of location). It is a fixed-term contract for approximately 11 months at full-time hours.

Pay and benefits: AUD 129,000 - AUD 143,000 per year, plus 15.4% ABC nominated superannuation.
