The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Operations Manager to provide strong operational leadership at the Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC).

Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a 954-bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region. The facility includes three mainstream accommodation units, two protection units, two management units, and several spaces for those who require additional supports such as vulnerable prisoners, and prisoners at risk.

As Operations Manager, you will lead the day-to-day operations of MRC, driving safe, effective and contemporary custodial practices while contributing to the strategic direction and continuous improvement of the prison. You will lead a diverse team of custodial and non-custodial staff and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the effective management of prisoners and delivery of integrated services.

This is a high-impact leadership role requiring sound judgement, strong stakeholder management and a contemporary understanding of prisoner management, security and the unique needs of a remand population.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a diverse workforce, promoting Corrections Victoria's vision and fostering a strong culture of safety, accountability and performance.
  • Oversee the delivery of key custodial operations, including prisoner management, security, movements, reception and discharge, escorts, visits and searching.
  • Ensure custodial services are effectively integrated with education, industry, clinical and other support services.
  • Identify and resolve operational issues and drive continuous improvement across the prison.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support effective prisoner management and service delivery.

We are looking for an experienced correctional leader who can operate confidently in a complex and changing environment and bring people together to deliver safe, effective and integrated prison operations.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to lead a diverse workforce.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of working within a custodial environment.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in correctional delivery, prisoner management, OHS, HR or offender treatment.

Qualifications/requirements:

  • Preservice training (or jurisdictional equivalent) or the preparedness to complete certain modules of the preservice training.
  • Custodial Management is favourable but not essential.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and misconduct screening.
