The Close Observation Unit (COU) at the Mersey Community Hospital is a six‑bed level 2 Critical Care area designed for acutely ill medical and surgical patients who require close haemodynamic, cardiac, respiratory, or neurological monitoring beyond what can be provided on a standard ward. It supports patients with single‑organ failure, arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, post‑operative needs, sepsis, DKA, and other acute conditions, offering non‑invasive ventilation, cardiac monitoring, complex assessments, and stabilisation prior to transfer when needed.

Care is delivered within a values‑driven framework grounded in Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence, alongside the unit’s extended values of Integrity, Advocacy, Team, Learning, Mentorship, Enthusiasm, Cohesion and Communication, which collectively guide practice and team culture. These principles underpin the unit’s commitment to evidence‑based care, collaborative teamwork, patient‑centred decision‑making, continuous quality improvement, and safe, timely escalation or transfer when higher‑level care is required.

Hospital Aides working in COU are integral to daily workflow, stock management, specimen transportation, stock ordering, room preparation and turnover, patient interaction, general cleaning and equipment management, and general support for nursing staff. They collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and actively participate in safety and quality and continuous improvement initiatives.

You will need to be able to work autonomously and as part of a team, take accountability and responsibility for the aspects of your role, be highly diligent, with a high work ethic, and be able to think ahead to stay on top of tasks and support the nursing team.
