Working in Cairns

Far North Queensland is a diverse region known for its stunning beaches, ancient rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns captures the best of the region, offering natural beauty, rich culture and the full amenities of a large regional city. With an international airport, quality schools, hospitals, shopping centres and a thriving arts and dining scene, Cairns provides a relaxed tropical lifestyle with beaches, waterfalls, walking tracks and endless outdoor activities. This environment creates a strong, community-focused culture across our Cairns CSSCs, where staff work closely with children, families and local communities. In this role, you may travel to nearby towns or occasionally fly to remote areas to support families. While the work can be challenging, the insight you gain into the community and the variety of experiences make it incredibly rewarding and an excellent foundation for your CSO career.

Additional regional incentives include:

  • Relocation support and assistance (negotiable at panel)
  • $2,500 annual remote and regional allowance
  • $50.70 fortnightly locality allowance
  • 5 Additional days of Annual Leave

What does being a CSO mean?

  • Deliver statutory child protection services, including assessment, intervention, casework, and case management
  • Attend court and write affidavits
  • Work with partner agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations
  • Provide safe, culturally informed, and respectful support to families from diverse backgrounds

This is challenging work - but it's also deeply rewarding. You'll help build safer, brighter futures for Queensland's children.

  • 12.75% superannuation
