The School Wangkatjungka Remote Community School (RCS) was established in 1962 as Christmas Creek School. Parts of the original school remain today and are highly valued by both the school and the wider community. In 1990, the school was renamed Wangkatjungka RCS.
Our wonderful communities play an active and valued role in school life, working alongside staff to ensure our students experience a high-quality, culturally responsive learning environment where they can thrive. There are three language groups associated with Wangkatjungka RCS, including Walmajarri, Gooniyandi and Wangkatjungka. Wangkatjungka RCS is located in a remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 110 km from the nearest town centre, Fitzroy Crossing. Access to the community includes approximately 20 km of unsealed road. The Wangkatjungka community is surrounded by three cattle stations: Beefwood Park Station, Bulka Station and Christmas Creek Station.
The Role We are seeking enthusiastic, dedicated and engaging Primary Teachers to join our team at WRSC. Graduate teachers are warmly encouraged to apply! We welcome educators who are passionate about improving student outcomes and eager to develop their practice through explicit instruction, the Science of Learning and evidence-informed teaching.
Teachers will deliver high-quality learning experiences across the Primary curriculum, with a strong focus on literacy and mathematics. A sound understanding of the Big Six of Literacy - oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension - alongside explicit teaching of writing and grammar, is essential. Experience delivering structured programs, including Daily Reviews in literacy and mathematics, Spelling Mastery and Corrective Reading, is desirable but not essential; graduates with a passion for learning are encouraged to apply.
We seek educators who use student achievement data to inform planning, monitor progress and continually refine their practice using current research and High Impact Teaching Strategies. Strong classroom routines, explicit modelling, guided practice and regular checks for understanding are essential.
Successful applicants should build positive relationships with students, families, colleagues and the wider community, embracing culturally responsive teaching in a remote Aboriginal community. Experience supporting Students at Educational Risk (SAER), developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and differentiating instruction to meet diverse learning needs is essential.
- Display a strong understanding of the Primary curriculum and effective teaching and learning practices.
- Create engaging, purposeful and challenging learning experiences that cater for diverse abilities and learning needs.
- Prioritise and protect the literacy and numeracy blocks and use assessment data to inform teaching, monitor progress and target support and extension.
- Establish safe, inclusive classrooms with clear routines, high expectations and positive behaviour practices.
- Build respectful relationships and are interested in incorporating our local culture, language, community and context into learning.
- Display a commitment to ongoing professional learning, reflection, collaboration and whole-school improvement.
- Bring enthusiasm, initiative and a willingness to contribute their strengths and interests to the wider school community.
Above all, we are looking for team players who are willing to learn, grow and contribute to our school community. We value strong relationships, a love of learning and a genuine commitment to making a difference. At Wangkatjungka, a willingness to be part of our team, embrace feedback and learn alongside others will always matter more than experience alone!
Every child. Every lesson. Every day.
