Working in Townsville

Townsville is the vibrant hub of North Queensland, offering a mix of coastal beauty, tropical islands, and a thriving regional city. As part of the Townsville CSSC, you’ll work across some of the region’s most stunning areas — including Ayr, Burdekin, Magnetic Island, Ingham, Hinchinbrook, Charters Towers, Hughenden and Palm Island — with occasional overnight travel. Townsville itself offers over 300 sunny days a year, a strong local economy, great amenities, and natural attractions like the Great Barrier Reef, Castle Hill, and lively beachfront precincts. Working in Child Protection here gives you a unique insight into the community and the chance to make a meaningful impact across a diverse and rewarding region.

What does being a CSO mean?

As a CSO, you’ll be a voice for children and young people, ensuring their safety and wellbeing under the Child Protection Act 1999. You’ll:

  • Work closely with families, caregivers, and community organisations.
  • Deliver statutory child protection services, including assessment, intervention, casework, and case management.
  • Attend court and write affidavits.
  • Work with partner agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations.
  • Provide safe, culturally informed, and respectful support to families from diverse backgrounds.

This is challenging work — but it’s also deeply rewarding. You’ll help build safer, brighter futures for Queensland’s children.

What you get for becoming a CSO:

  • PO3 Starting salary of $102,817 - $111,975.
  • 12.75% superannuation.
  • Flexible leave and TOIL options.
